Been a 2016 40e driver for over a month now, the first week was a proper honeymoon - my commute is 17kms with some nasty hills so I can't drive the whole trip on electricity alone but of course the way back is downhill so I can pick up the kids from daycare and still have 2kms to spare. Average consumption for that week was 4,1liters/100km or 57 mpg.
But then the next week the polar freeze from the North Pole engulfed much of Europe and we had 2 weeks of frozen hell - the coldest was -26,5C and the warmest(!) was -9C...this car does not like cold. Not only does the charging take forever, the batteries are dead before you can start that wonky Spotify-client on the iDrive. Average for that week was 10.8 liters/100km or 21 mpg and on the worst day (-26,5C) a whopping 15.8l/100km or 15 mpg - but I drove like a maniac that day so I could get indoors asap. This week we're back to normal (3C) and Monday was almost all electric, maybe 1,6 liters/100km and today will be almost the same - still at work. |

Your actual MPG wasn't too bad. My temperature is often 0-15C, but my MPG in local is sometimes worse than yours when driving with depleted battery. |

Hi! Just the cord that came with the car - I charge it overnight and then again at work so usually the 6 to 8 hours is not a problem. It's finally warming up here and my commute is showing 1.8L/100km (130,6mpg) for the last couple of days (to work 3.6 (65,3mpg) and all electric back home). Of course this info is from BMW's own portal and my confidence in statistics by the German automotive industry has taken a few dents lately.

New to X5s, and I love them so far- this look like it would be a GREAT family (2 large akitas and a small wife) trip car to the north Minnesota woods, as well as daily work commuting or driving for field engineering.
Right now, coming off of a smaller tuned Subaru FXT- I'm leaning towards a later 3rd gen x5 5.0i as my next 'toy', the 3.5i is faster than I expected, and smoother. Don't really need the speed, but for something of this size and tow capacity (does this have the same as the all gas units?), a generation higher, Hybrid? This is pretty much my ultimate vehicle. Looked at a GLE43.. this 2014 x5 3.5i with an RS Race Chip- nearly equal the acceleration performance- yet have the advantages of the x5 over the GLE, and at less than half the cost of new. I was kind of forced into replacing a car before I was ready- so this X5 is my toe in the water. Nice water. |

X5 40e - How to check EV battery charge capacity?
Has anyone figured out if there is a way (e.g., a la old school E46-like OBC hack to view OBD system info via dash) to get the X5 40e to cough up the current EV battery charge capacity (i.e., what % of capacity is currently available to the battery pack). I have searched using google to no avail...maybe it is only available via and OBDII connected terminal...but I thought I'd ask...after 2.5 yrs, our battery seems to be roughly 7.x kWh based on charge time with a Level 1 or 2 charger....and the warranty on the pack triggers at 70% of the original capacity....
Thanks! |

2nd-ed - Has anyone every figured out if there is a way to check X5 40e Battery?
I too have an X4 40e and the time to charge is now down to about 2.5h on an L2 charger...which also nets out to 7.x kWh of capacity or so. Has anyone figured out the way to check the current battery status (i.e., how many cycles, and what is the current capacity of the pack remaining) similar to checking a phone or laptop LiON battery pack? There has to be a way. When I ask BMW I just get...um well, we'll replace it when it fails with no indication of how that is determined (also not delineated in the battery warranty)...
Thanks. ex |

Hi all, I'm considering getting a used 2017 x5 xdrive40e. Does anyone have an idea on maintenance costs and reliability of the vehicle? The remaining vehicle warranty expires on 12/26/20 and I'm trying to gauge repair and maintenance costs.

Battery issues with my X5e
2017 x5e, the last few weeks the battery drive doesn't kick in, only using the gas engine, which obviously saps my fuel efficiency. Has any other owner experienced this (I did a search and couldn't find anything, but the search variables could be endless)?
It had been working great until quarantine kicked in, and I haven't been driving as much (I don't drive a lot typically, only have 21k on the vehicle in just under 3 years, but I'm driving even less now). Before I go to the dealer, I wanted to see if anyone has experienced this. Thanks |

Would you do an Extended Warranty?
Hi Folks,
Our 16' 40e has had its original warranty expiry and we are considering BMW canada's out-of-warranty warranty extension. The prices are higher than if the vehicle was still under warranty so not sure if it is even worth considering now? The only issue we've encountered since being out of warranty was a faulty AC. So not sure of longterm reliability out there as the mileage increases. Currently have 99K km so about 62k miles. Here is what we are looking at: 2YR/40,000km = $7,100 cad 3YR/60,000km = $10,200 cad 4YR/80,000km = $14,000 cad If the 40e only held its value we would be looking instead at another X5, but the depreciation on it is remarkable so we no choice but to keep it longer. Lesson learned..... lease a PHEV/EV for next time! TIA |

Purchased a 2017 BMW X5 40e this week off Vroom. Will hopefully have it in the next couple of weeks. I'm excited as this will be my first car in over three years (COVID and a move to the suburbs turned me off public transportation). My prior car was an 02 Impreza WRX that caught fire on the freeway so I'm hoping to have a better experience this time around.
Interested if anyone has advice, recommendations, or places that I should start. Seems like getting the at-home charger installed is a good idea? Also, tried looking for it on the forums... do people recommend against changing out the wheels/rims? I'd like a black on black look but don't want to downgrade from the stock option. Thanks for your patience - have not been a car guy before. |

The depreciation for the 40e seems brutal. I just bought one that came off lease for less than half of what it probably cost new (though that's prob not accurate # since they likely got the tax rebate for the PHEV/EV) |

What do you guys think about this 2017 CPO 40e? I love it's all black look, and looks like nicely loaded.
Concern I have is it's relatively higher mileage. Close to 60k so it should be up for a major service right? Should I try to make the dealer to get that done before I take it, plus knock maybe 2, 3k off the selling price? https://cpo.bmwusa.com/certified/201...7001?zip=60611 |

Only managed to knock 1k off the selling price but I'm happy. It was nicely maintained with only some very minor road rash on the hood and bumper. Love the all black look, and the immediate torque at low speed really makes me smile! |
