3.5i M sports front suspension - noise (Updated video.)

Hi guys,

My x5 develop this lite noise like small thumb from drive side front.
Only when I drive very slow like 5miles to 10miles/h. When I accelerate and brake. But most of time when I very slowly accelerate from stop.

I thought it must be a sway bar end link but when I check, all arms and busing and bolts are very tight and no movements.

Do you have any idea??

By the way it has 70k miles on it.

With 70k miles on it, I suggest you to re-torque or re-tighten the whole suspension components.
It could also be something with the brake.

Thank you.
Today when I drive like 15mile/h and then release gas pedal, very lite clunk squeaking noise.
It is very lite and you can't even hear if I turn on the radio.
But I can hear and it bugs me.

And funny thing is when I pushed 'sports' mode, I can hear it less. I don't know because of engine noise or something, but somehow, I can't hear that noise.

Hmmm

Hmmm that is weird. Did you check the upper mounts nuts? See if they are within torquing specs?
To me it kinda sounds like the spring. I could be wrong.

Could be a dead shock too.

Hmmm, I will check the upper mount bolts. But it is very hard to access F15.
Hope it is not the dead shock,..

Thank you guys.

I just took my car in for I think the exact same noise. I describe it as creaking when slowing or accelerating from a stop or very slow speed...is that the noise you are referring to? I can only hear it when driving very slowly with the radio off.

Dealer said it was the brake pads contacting the rotors after the brake is applied and that it is "normal". I was planning on taking it to another dealer to have it fixed because it is definitely not normal.

It kind of makes sense to me that it is the brakes because road bumps and/or turning does not cause it only when I slow or speed up at slow speeds...but I still dont know if it is actually the brakes. I haven't had a chance to put the car up and look underneath and pry around to try to get it to replicate.

My car has 34k miles.

I took mine in twice to investigate a thump noise coming from the right front when going over a speed bump or on/off a driveway, WITH the steering wheel turned left. In both cases, the dealer did not find anything with the suspension, but made adjustments to the rear hatch. It did seem to help the last time.

If the sound comes when you apply gas, I would look over the engine/transmission mounts and generally the powerplant suspension. A cracked mount or loose bolt is the prime suspect.

If the sound comes when you either apply breaks or go over bumps that cause suspension movements or compression, look over control arms, links, springs, etc.

Update:

Thank you guys, I re-torque strut mount but it was tight.
And I replaced a swayer end link. Noise is gone. It was the swayer end link. After I took out old one, it doesn't damaged at all and looks and move very good but after I put a new OEM one, noise is gone.

Anyway, thank you guys.

Sometimes they may not look damaged, and the wear and tear may not look obvious, but it may have served its time and needs to be changed.

I had the same noise and after two visits at the dealer they replaced both front spidels (swivels) on guarantee. Now the noise disapeared and the direction seems too be more tight...also the tires were alligned as part of the process...I have 45k km...

I bought
1 front struts with springs. - I don't need the springs but it comes.
1. upper control arms because of your post.

Had same exact noise and it can be heard also when going over small road bumps, you can also hear it if you roll down the windows.

Dealer replaced this Y part in front left suspension and its gone. Hope it helps

I tried to replace front strut but it wasn't easy and different 3 series BMW.
Bottom of spindle, bolts are too tight and I can't access with socket. Then I had to remove ball joint and then I can access but still it would be too much work for me.

I bought to remove front strut was easy but I was wrong.

I kind of give up and let see how it goes. If it goes worse, then I will drop it to shop.
Anyway, thank you guys.

50i here. Didn't have this noise before and I just had both upper control arms (thrust arms) replaced because the thrust arm bearings were worn. After work was completed I've had the same creaking noise as your first video mikeson. BMW and my Indy shop have both taken a look and re-torqued everything.. said it all looks good. This is no bueno.. Any ideas??

Ben, what part of the brake could be causing this? Caliper not re-installed properly?

Unfortunately I didn't have my car long enough to have this issue.
But, my guess would be the lower arm (#13) or the tension strut (#8)
