Thumbs up monkiboy x5 f15 build thread - cf fender trim installed!

this will be my build thread for my 2017 x5 m sport 3.5i xdrive with MPPK and MPE.

lots of interesting photos and video content to be shared.

if you have a mod thread for your f15, post up and let me know so i can follow/subscribe as i haven't found any or any that folks regularly seem to keep updated.

love the builds where folks make these fun machines their own!

thanks for joining me on the journey.

i really enjoyed the 6WB cluster and unfortunately being in the USA didn't get that option with my x5 build so set out to figure it out.

came across these threads:
http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...php?p=16691553
http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1021180

unfortunately, neither had working photos and the information had not been updated nor did anyone respond in the threads any longer so set out to find new accurate info.

part number i used was 62108781321. new they are quite pricey but was able to find new in box on ebay and offered about half of new and scored big time. definitely timed this mod right with this listing.

i did not need the adapter shown in the DIY thread above. my cluster had the exact same connectors as the 6WB and was a simple remove of old cluster and plug in the same connectors into same location on new cluster.

hardest part was figuring out how to get the old cluster out and that was only maybe 15-20 minutes.

coding was next and that took about 20 minutes and ready to roll in style and new tech - pretty exciting.

here are some photos of the gold latches holding the cluster in place for a good visual of how to attack releasing them for removal of the cluster. and yes, you must remove the external cluster trim before removing the cluster. just start at one end low and gently but firmly begin pulling towards you and it will pop out like most bmw interior pieces. it can be quite snug in some sections but does release nicely clips intact and goes back in nice and securely afterward.

on to photos. let me know if you would like video. thanks!

Nice upgrade. How much did you get that cluster for? And what kind of coding is required?

thanks sir! i think it was 1200USD. coding required in detail can be seen in the links referenced above namely:
"Add 6WB to FA through ESYS - Add 6WB to your FA in the SALAPA folder following the VO Coding Guide"

one of the first things to do was a debadge. i've always done this on all my vehicles for a clean and easy to keep clean look.

next thing was installation of the m performance v2 steering wheel. the stock m sport wheel just doesn't do it for me in several regards. the diameter felt large, the girth insufficient, the leather lacking, the aesthetic boring, the shape not sporty or ergonomic enough. it is miles better than the non m sport but there is loads of room for improvement. so off the m sport wheel went and on the new wheel went!

while i was at it i swapped the stock wheel trim for the carbon fiber steering trim for a nice look. i plan to swap the interior trim to the m performance carbon fiber later so this is just working my way towards that while i have the wheel apart. currently, i'm told the m performance interior trim in carbon fiber is backordered until december so have to get my nice carbon fiber bits in where i can

Thanks for sharing all the pictures for the steering wheel swap. Do you happen to have a DIY write up for it? Overall, awesome job on your mods and looking forward for what is next. 👍🏼

i personally don't but it really is very straight forward. i am coming from subaru and picked up the 340 earlier this year to be surprised by how easy bmw is to work on. especially interior pieces - they snap off and go back on as firmly and securely as they felt originally. it's lovely.

anyway you can follow most of the first steps here:
http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1204092

- you want to kill the battery in the trunk first
- remove air bag by using a long tool on the side of the lower air bag where holes are present and push in to release clips
- it will pop out
- unclip connector/harness of air bag and set aside air bag
- begin taking photos from several angles if this is your first time swapping because all those clips and harnesses need to come out and into your new wheel and remembering can be tough sometimes for a truly back to stock look and fit as some are in there tight.
- if something doesn't feel right it probably isn't. the wiring layout is smart and compact and tight and purposeful.
- remove steering trim.
- remove paddles
- steering wheel only goes back on one way as it's notched so no need to worry about marking alignment.
- reverse.
- all screws are t20. steering wheel nut is 16mm.
- torque spec for steering wheel nut i think is 48lbs

if you have any questions, let me know. i've only done a swap three times but can do it in under 30 minutes without issue now and glad to help!

next thing to conquer were the infamous kidney grills. swapped out that chrome business for the business - gloss black m performance grills.

just as easy as the 340. pop the top bolts out, squeeze your hand in between the front fascia and front body and start unclipping with your fingers from top and sides first then bottom for last and out they go. once one is out you can even use that massive opening to assist reaching the other side even easier

takes about 20 minutes and huge difference

i forgot to mention i got my 2017 x5 3.5i x drive msport with MPPK and MPE.

very glad i did. they both make an awesome upgrade to the stock performance. i think the MPPK is much more appreciated than the latter. the MPE is surprisingly getting a bit throatier and gurgles more which is what i was hoping for.

the 340 i got a few months prior has the MPPSK which is an overwhelming slam dunk on the f30. the sound is intoxicating and at the flick of a button is muffled to stock corolla levels. it was the best of both worlds.

i realize the x5 isn't in the same category but that was always a dream on this build ad the MPE help quite a bit in that regard.

the cluster looks similar to the one on X4, is it possible F15/F16 cluster fit on F26/F25?

swapped out the knee pads of the car for the nicer leather wrapped ones from the x5M.

I think for a while folks had to use a source to order from Europe but I found out they are readily available from the dealer and ordered from getbmwparts.com who always have amazing service and some of the lowest pricing!

while I was at, I got the carbon fiber center console piece to continue to work towards my complete carbon fiber interior aesthetic.
