* 2002 Lexus IS 300 - crashed into a fence ($16k in repairs)

Wasn't my fault. Was back in NZ - was driving down a 2 lane country road at ~60mph and noted a truck towing a horse float well ahead stationary and pulled over to the left. As I approached it, I moved to the center of the road to give them a wider berth - and then they just turned right straight across in front of me without warning or even looking to see if anything was coming. I almost got round them but they clipped my passenger side, punching me into a slide sideways across a driveway into a fence, whereby the car bounced back, spun 180 degrees and ended up stopped straddling a ditch.

In hindsight, the horse float did you a favor...

How so? Made their turn slower?

If they didn't have the float I might have been able to brake and go behind their truck, but I couldn't with the float - and I didn't want to T-bone either the truck or float, hence I tried to get around them.

you can write F=MA all day long, but until you get out into the field and live it, you have no clue what you're talking about.

The only one that was my fault was my sisters z4 m coupe. I spun it off the road into a ditch with very minimal damage. I got into 2 accidents in my e39. Both times hit in the right side, both times by buicks.

Amen. I remember my first accident which occurred around 35-40MPH. They found my front license plate a block away.

Nothing totaled but did wreck the transmission in a 1978 Chrysler Córdoba twice. I remember not telling my dad but laying in bed Sunday morning and hearing the engine rev as he tried to back my car out of the driveway, thinking "fuck" followed by him coming in the house yelling. He also noticed the bald tires from burnouts started on patches of ice. Also remember having to push it out of a parking space wearing a white tux at senior prom because reverse was busted.

My uncle's mid-80's 5 Series in 2001. Rear ended someone as we were leaving a stop light. Must have hit him going 5-8mph max. I totaled the car, no lie! ... Turns out the engine mounts we're rusted and that jolt was all it needed to separate the engine. Anyway, he was donating as parts at the end if the summer anyway, so he wasn't really mad.

yeah, force is an amazing thing. In the 80s my brother wrapped his car around a telephone pole so the front/rear bumpers were almost touching. The bench front seat shot up through the windshield and was almost sticking straight up.

The thing that saved him and his buddy was neither were wearing their seat belts (and I'm betting they were both plowed). When the car hit the pole after acting like a centrifuge, they were both thrown out the passenger door about 10 yards into some nice soft bushes. Lots of scrapes and some bad bruises but both walked away.

I?m not sure if one should NEVER get in a car with you or you just need a lot of nannies - hence anything made after 1980 you are good because of abs, traction control and auto pilot...

The whole point of crashing is to learn how to drive without nannies - to hold the car at the very edge of control ... to slightly exceed that edge and master the forces to bring it back ... to drive by feel. And also because you're a reckless fuck up willing to take insane risks just to see what happens.

Unless you've crashed a lot (or spun out on a track) you probably don't know how to really drive without nannies.

No clue, all I know is my 70s era cars had nothing because I mostly built them from junk and parts I got for next to free.

Anybody that's ever built a working car from stuff the junk yard was willing to give you for mostly free knows what I'm talking about.

That v8 matador cost me $80 all in.

Sorry, but you fail. You crashed because you ran out of skill on public roads while attempting to push your car. You practice on a track where there's less chance of you injuring yourself or others. I've been in minor fender benders but nothing like what your list shows. I'll stick to saving most of that crap for actual race events and would much rather continue to campaign my car at sanctioned events.

What I will agree with, however, is that you need to explore the limits to be able to consistently push your car to the edge of its limits. However, this must be done in a controlled environment and it takes much seat time, not just stints on public roads.
