2015 X5 HUD display issue

The windshield was replaced due to the stone chip. The insurance advised me to go to the Speedy Glass since it’s easy to schedule and they will do the insurance claim as well. However, I heard some bad stories when the windshield was replaced by 3rd parties.
So, I went to the dealer even though I had to pay the invoice upfront and claim it myself, and also it took more than 2 weeks to schedule an appointment.

However, the HUD is a little out of focus. It’s hard to tell and prove it's not focused, but I get dizzy enough to turn it off. I never had this issue before. I use the HUD all the time, I loved it. But now I get a headache, it forced me to turn it off due to the dizziness.
I contacted the dealer, but they are saying they have replaced it with the factory glass, and they didn’t temper with the HUD unit. So, there is nothing they can do. I don’t know what I can do here.

They most likely used the wrong windshield replacement.

There will be a definite difference between 'fuzzy' and what you see with an improper windshield for HUDs wherein you'll see a double image fairly clearly. I have a proper BMW windshield in my 2015 X5 and the HUD image isn't as sharp as I'd like but also not distracting in any way…definitely not a double image. Have you cleaned the HUD itself to ensure it's not obscuring the image being projected? You can also find cheap reflective film from Amazon or eBay to test out the clarity of the image being projected. This test approach should tell you if it's the windshield or the HUD. Hope you sort it out…I similarly love the HUD and dislike being without one.

Do you have paper work from the dealer that has the windshield's part nbr? If you do, then you can easily check if the correct windshield was installed. You can verify the correct 11 digit BMW part nbr by using one of the online part database sites like https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/par...15-BMW-X5_50iX.

Just input the last 7 digits of your VIN, go to the VEHICLE TRIM diagrams and look up the correct 11 digit BMW part nbr for the windshield (found under GLAZING) that has the HUD option (S610A) along with any other options listed that you have...then compare that part nbr to what was installed on your car.

Thanks, I will try to use the reflective film to confirm. The tricky part is it's really hard to tell whether it's a double image or blurry. It looks okay but it's giving me a headache enough for me to turn it off.

Wow, thanks, it's a very useful site to confirm the parts. I was hoping they used the different parts so it's obvious to talk to them. But it appears to be they used the right part at least on the paper. 51317292400

Is there a way to calibrate the HUD somehow? I can use the ista+.

It appears to be somehow I got the bad batch, and I don't have any proof to fight with the dealer. I can't believe I can't use the HUD any longer.
The only difference I can find is the number at the bottom, previously it was E000287, but now it's E000260.

I have a aftermarket windshield and mine is perfectly clear. Did you try adjusting it up or down or rotating it from the idrive.

Well …
I bought a 2017 with an 'official' replacement screen with a blurred HUD image .. even though it's a 'connected drive' screen.

Will see if it's gets hit by a rock so a proper replacement can be fitted ..

The dealer has agreed to take a look and offered me the loner car.
They have compared with other cars and done whatever they can. And they said they asked their installer about this. It seems like they outsource this. But the bottom line is nothing's wrong with the glass. I guess I need to live with this glass and give up the HUD.

The carlex window you have is the exact one I have. I recently had mine replaced and your part number matches mine (43R-000578 and E000260)

My HUD is crystal clear. Its definitely is the right part #. I'm wondering if they bumped or got something on the HUD when the window was out. You might try cleaning it (maybe you will get lucky) but another alternative might be (assuming it is the windshield) might be something like this:

As matter of fact, I bought that film already and put it on the windshield. And confirm the HUD is crystal clear on that film. I thought this would prove that it's something to do with the glass. However, it doesn't justify the dealer to do something about it.

That really does confirm that the issue is the windshield. The dealer really should stand behind it. Even here in NJ the independent windshield installers will guarantee the window against defects (safelite) and they told me that if my HUD was blurry after installing the window they would replace for free. At least the decal allows you to use your HUD but the dealer should really stand behind the work.

Complain again. If the SA is being difficult ask for the SD. If the SD won't help, call BMW's 1-800 customer line and ask to create an official case. BMW NA told me "No" when I first filed a recent complaint and subsequently covered the majority of a job that was out of warranty.

BMW NA is quite good to work with, in my experience.

EDIT: also, based on your pic, it looks like a slight vertically displaced double image. Maybe ISTA could correct that?

I would still push for another windscreen (push upward to BMW NA as suggested above). It clearly states that a new windshield MUST BE TRIED if the windshield is blurry....not can be or may be tried.

They said they will talk to the manager about this today, and the manager just called me. He wants me to come in for comparing with similar year X5s. And they are 100% sure there is nothing wrong with the glass, and it’s identical to the other X5s.
This is a really fxxx up situation. My eyes can clearly see that it's not clear and get a headache but not them for some reason.
I guess I'm going to take my car back and call the customer line to complain. Hope they can do something about it.

FYI, I asked them about the calibration with ISTA, and they said they did that already when they replaced the windshield.

They don't agree with me and kept saying everything is fine. It's quite difficult for me to push them since the blur is not obvious, but it's enough for me to get a headache.

Is the picture in post #10 an image of your HUD? If yes, then I agree with you that it is blurry. Good luck with your next step.
