Bad turbo

So, the f15 diesel went into a bit of a limp, noticed it kinda ran out of steam on the highway the other day. Wife was driving it and check engine light came on so had the dealer look at it. They tell me the waste gate on the turbo is stiff and not opening past 30%.....and I need a new turbo, but hey have we got a deal for u....with ur bmw bucks we will knock 400 bucks off so it will only cost u $7400 bucks before tax.....F my life, no thanks pick it up yesterday and have a drink or six to drown my sorrows a bit.

Plugged in my scanner today and sure enough it tells me the same thing, getting codes 244C00 charging pressure too low, 2bbb00 charging pressure actuator mechanically faulty near closed position, 2bbc00 charging pressure actuator mechanically faulty near open position.

Trucks only got 88, thousand km so like 55 thousand miles on the odometer, is this a normal thing for these vehicles?

Also, the garret turbo at FCP is very well priced considering the alternative. Has anyone got any intel on it as it’s supposed to be oem.

At least looks like there is some room in there being the strait 6, has anyone reading this changed one and any pitfalls to look forward to?

Any advice is appreciated, thanks for listening.

Do these motors still have swirl plates? I pulled turbo and replaced but a piece of metal fell out of it! A plate of some sort approx 1” x 1”. Would like to add pictures but not sure how yet. Any ideas?

This is defienelty not a common issue with turbo on N57 engine, especially with such a low mileage. Piece of metal fell out of old turbo or new one?

Piece of metal fell out of old turbo. Honestly not sure from where but it did have soot on it so my guess is exhaust.

Wow! Nice work tackling the replacement yourself. Are there any vanes missing from the turbine wheel?

No vanes looked to be missing but some of the intakes were chipped and bent at edges. Thanks, it was a bit of a marathon as I couldn’t find anything on the f15 so had to kinda just start wrenching….at one point about 5 hours in I was thinking what the !?$@ have I done! Fortunately I got it done but just a lot concerned about the metal…

What metal type is it? Magnetic?

What do you mean intake looked chipped? Like the intake of the turbo?

Interesting, that spot usually gets about 1000 degrees

Glad you replaced and fixed the issue, please share more details to replace and fix it. Would broken piece of metal might cause turbo waste gate stuck not fully open? I would think the turbo is not happy with this broken piece in it. I can't imagine the piece from anywhere else like exhaust manifold or engine but turbo itself.

My F15 35D seems as though it is having very similar symptoms. As you said, there doesn’t seem to be much info on pulling the turbo on these online. How was your experience? Any tips? Thanks!
