My understanding is that leaving it in the middle is basically turning the feature off. So if you want the same temperature throughout the top and lower vents keep it in the middle.

I was watching F15 reviews on YouTube a few months ago (i watched probably a hundred of them) and one of the reviewers mentioned that those dials adjust +/-4°C on top of set temps based upon red/blue adjustment on the vents they are on. I actually have used them for a quick temp adjustment couple of times since I got my F15 a month ago and can confirm they do appear to function as intended.

Yes, you can on the new G-chassis, even though there is Menu button by the AC buttons, preset is much easier.
BMW engineers in Germany doesn't really use the cup holders like American do.
When I have my drink or drinks on the cup holder, I have to twist and turn to get to the Menu button for the AC.
