50i loves to eat oil :)

My 50i piggy politely asked me on the screen today to feed him 2 quartz of extra fine oil. So I scratched my head and went to nearest parts store and bought Castrol 0w-20 and fed this pig 2 quartz. Exactly the amount to get oil level from min to max on the electronic "dipstick"

It serves me well and I tend to push a lot often, so I'm happy as long as it delivers performance on demand I'll continue to feed him tasty oil he loves so much

I wasn't aware 0w 20 is an approved oil.
And the v8 are known for burning oil and smoking as they age.

It says in my manual 0-20 0-30 or 0-40 as preferred oils and a bunch of alternatives as well. I would personally used something like 10-40, but I'll just follow the manual to avoid issues

Does the manual list temperatures as a guide also?
I'd try to use the thinner oils in colder climates And the thicker oils in hotter climates.

I've gone through a couple dealer top-offs. Call some nearby dealerships and ask them if any do free top offs. Some don't, some do but with an appointment (which is dumb and unnecessary), and a few you can swing by anytime.

Hey kanvas, how often on average you top off oil in your e63tu? Just want to know rough estimate, like every 5k miles or more often? I guess it depends on how you drive it too?

*N63TU

Since ownership (Aug. 2014), I think I've topped it off 3 or 4 times. By no means an aggressive driver, but I don't baby it either. If the road opens up or am on a freeway on ramp, that's when I push it; it goes through an Italian tune-up once in a while when I hit up the mountain twisties

My dealership gives me two quarts to keep with me.

Two times I've had to pull over and fill her up.

I just got my CPO 50i in Feb and have seen the low oil warning twice already. 4 quarts in 4000 miles. I just had service done and they said its within spec. 1 quart per 750 miles is within spec. I had them give me 2 extra quarts for the trunk for next time.

I finally had to do first top off at 45k miles. Due for an oil change in about 2k miles.

This is not an issue for me, but I do oil changes every 5k miles.

Not sure if you buy into it, but the manual also prescribes BMW LL certified oil. I definitely don't think it's a big deal if you're reasonably close to your next official service but if you're just at the start of a service interval I could foresee a circumstance where BMW could give you some headaches on the off-chance that you need any warranty work where the choice of oil could have theoretically had an impact.

Kinda disappointed but I expected it eventually...
2017 50i. 6700 miles. Going down the interstate with the cruise set at 83MPH on the start of a 500 mile road trip and "DING" goes the oil meter. Only yellow, then 75 miles later "DING" again and now it is critical and red. Had to stop and I hate stopping except for fuel. Love the car but god dam at +$85K and 6 months old I should not need to exit and buy two quarts of oil. No dealers around so not an option.

FYI. Every dealer I visited in the previous generation just ran me through the bay and topped it off for free like they should FWIW.

Just pissed I had to stop and pay for oil.

Hey man - this is inherent engine design - has to do with materials engine is made of and in the long run this is small price to pay for it's performance. This is a high performance V8 4.4L TwinPower - it's no joke of an engine - basically best currently BMW has (including S63 variation)
I would be worried if it's not eating oil - then there's an issue, but as long as it eats - it's healthy engine and working as it should - be happy man

It gets a bit better after breaking in period, but it will still eat oil, just not as often. It's probably a good idea to carry 2 quarts in the trunk side storage behind panel - costs less than $20 and doesn't smell

I'm pretty sure you're suppose to us 5W30 cause that's what the dealership sells.

Yep, I get it and have been here before since this is my third one. I just don't remember it ever occurring this early in its life. Was more optimistic that running design changes and updates would have made it less thirsty for black gold. Performance absolutely outweighs a couple quarts of oil every so often.

My 2010 750i and 2012 750i V8 ActiveHybrid (what a rocket that was)....required oil every 1,000 miles or so. Insane. I still get letters from "ambulance chaser" class action lawyers trying to get me to sign on with one of their lawsuits against BMW for high oil consumption.

Our dealer used to do free oil top offs, but the problem/issue must have been too widespread, as they now do not offer free oil.

I used LIQUI MOLY 5W-40 couple weeks ago. It seems like guys that do oil changes every 5k have significantly smaller oil consumption.

Thanks for the info. It seems like 2 qts every 2 months is becoming the norm on my 2015 50i. Dealer provides free top up but now that I am nearing the end of my powertrain warranty, I am concerned whether there is something wrong with the engine. Is there some test that dealer can do to ensure no issues?
