Coilovers - Impact on Resale Value / Marketability to Dealer
Hey guys,
I'm considering upgrading to KW V3s, but have some concerns: Installation is coming in around $1,200. Given the cost of this labor, it's almost feels like an indefinite solution since putting stock suspension back in when you sell the car would cost you another $1,200. But, maybe you could consider it a wash if you could sell the kit for at least this much down the road... My question - If left on the vehicle, do you think an aftermarket upgrade of this magnitude would hurt, help, or have no impact on the resale value generally speaking? I suppose it all depends on the buyer, but feel there is probably a majority in the anti-aftermarket camp. I also would be concerned a authorized BMW dealer may pass on the vehicle with this type of mod when considering a trade-in. This is the ONLY aftermarket mod I would consider on my 50i. I am completely underwhelmed by my "standard suspension". Thoughts?

From a private sale perspective it is a pro and a con. If you seem knowledgeable as a buyer I would see if as a pro that you love your car take care of it customized it to your liking. The con is a buyer could see it as negatively impacting the life of other suspension components and that you are going for looks, etc.
For a dealer to know or care is unlikely to matter.

Do you plan on selling it privately or trading it in to a dealership? If you trade it in, it will be a non factor. A BMW dealer will still take it in as a trade in. How long do you plan on keeping your X5 for? Looks like you have a 2016 so in another year, they won't be able to CPO it so coilovers won't matter.
Also, $1200 for labor is crazy expensive. I would think more like $600 labor would be reasonable to install them. I was able to install my coilovers using jack stands in my garage in 6 hours so a shop should be able to do it in 4-5 tops.

I couldn't say if it would be either a private sale or trade-in now, but wanted to get some opinions on anything I should consider now before moving forward. Great to hear you think the dealer wouldn't care. I know I'm as shocked as you! I've received quotes on installation from 5 independent shops in the Boston area, all ranging from $1,000 to $1,750. I'm not savvy enough to do it on my own...

I would get more quotes, maybe also from NY/NJ area. The first quotes that I received for a muffler delete were around $800 just for labor no parts. Then, I was able to find a capable shop to do it for $250.

I could probably go up to NH, or as far south as RI or CT if anyone has recommendations.

I asked this same question to my dealer when they installed my KW’s. They said no issue, they would just set them back to the standard KW setting and good to go. FWIW I paid about $1200 to have mine installed as well. That included alignment.

Man, for that labor price, you could buy me a round trip ticket, simple tools, hotel, and good steak with beer.

What do you guys think of this set on eBay?
Condition seems a little sketchy, particularly with the rust and "remanufactured" tag. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F192882602847

I would expect the KWV3 experience to exceed the DHP Kit.
