Text Message Sound

So I have a 2014 X5, iPhone 5S.
When I get a Text message I get no sound from the phone or car. The only way I know I have a text is if I see it on my iPhones screen or on the Nav little box where it shows my XM Radio station, time and bars.
Is there anyway to get the car or iPhone to make a sound?
I'm betting its an Apple thing and let me guess, Android phones make the alert sound.
Also what about emails, I thought the iDrive was also suppose to alert me to emails like Text's.
Thanks

As far as getting a tone for a text on your iPhone - it is a settable option on the phone.
Go to Settings - Sounds - Text Tone and then select a sound of your choice.
I don't think you can get emails on the iDrive from an iPhone 5s yet

Yes I know this.
I'm talking about when the iPhone is connected to the cars bluetooth and a text comes in I get no sound.

Known issue with iOS devices. It transfers all Bluetooth audio to the car when paired, including alerts. If the active source isn't Bluetooth you won't hear any alerts.

Android devices are typically a bit more selective in how audio is routed.

My phone just vibrates when a text comes in and it's hooked up to the cars Bluetooth. Strangely navi guidance doesn't come through Bluetooth either on my 2014 for google maps or waze.

It does on my 2008

Try this...got this to work on my 4s today.
  1. Connect Phone via bluetooth
  2. Go to Settings->Sound on your iPhone and crank the ringer and alerts sound all the way up
  3. Go to Notification Center->Messages and change "Alert Style" to Alerts
  4. Go to Notification Center->Messages and select an "Alert Sound"

Now when I get a new text message the audio volume is lowered and the alert is played through the car's audio.

Yeah, there is a setting in the car, Options in telephone. It says Audio, normally you have a check mark if you want to play streaming bluetooth from your phone to the car. On iPhones if this box is checked then the basic BT that iPhones have mute all sounds from your phone except a ringtone from a call.
The work around to get sounds like texts from your phone is to uncheck that Audio box. Now when your listening to Radio you get the sounds from your phone. If you like to stream your music then with the Audio box checked and while listening to Pandora from your iPhone if you get a text, the radio in the car volume will lower and play the alert over the cars speakers, but this only works in Media mode, not XM or Radio mode.

Yes but again for this to work the iPhone has to be the source of audio. If you're listening to fm radio you'll hear nada.

This is always being the way. BMW could implement a chime when a text us pushed to idrive over the visual cue.
