Tuning

Guys anyone tried either OE tune or BPM since we don't have to send out the ECU I really love this option . Any suggestions as to which one is better ?

These aren't the only tuners out there that will send you the files for you to upload yourself to your ecu. Just recently this past month, the ability to tune through the OBDII without shipping out the ecu, drilling, or piggy backs has been available. A lot more tuners have started shipping out OBDII cables with the files for you to upload yourself. For example Gintani and DME now offer these options along with many others as they have just started testing this method.

So which one would you guys recommend ? Also no hp gains advertised. Do you guys think it's better to wait before pulling the trigger to make sure they are able to test it out completely

I would wait a bit just to let the dust settle. Total retune is the ultimate, but I would struggle (and have) with losing my warranty vs the improvement over RaceChip. Tough decision.

My only thoughts on flash tuning other than posted above, is go into it thoughtfully. I’ve been custom tuning LS turbo engines since 2001. One common theme I have seen over the years is your tune is only as good as your tuner. There are a ton of LS turbo tuners around. I know less than 5 that I would let touch the ECM on my LS. A lot of folks think they can tune and I have scanned a lot of junk tunes.

This is correct the OBD2 option is now available and we are releasing our Personal Tuner handhelds to the public on Feb 1 and pre orders go out mid next week. Same concept as offered on the E70 platform is finally available for the F85.

Can the flash tune work with piggy back tune? Example having dinan stage 2 and flash tune?

Would probably throw a lot of error codes, fuel map and turbo psi would be in conflict. Dinan piggy back changes the sensor parameters that the ECU obtains and increased the PSI where as a true flash tune requires removal of the ECU to re-write the ECU fuel maps ect. Up until OBDII flash tuning, the S63 and N63 ECU had to be drilled as this engine had 2 ECU's. Lots of info on the M3/M4 forum.

To answer your question it's either or, flash or Dinan. Wouldn't advise doing both nor would the ECU recognize.

Attached picture is what a bench flash tune S55 ECU looks like, as bench flash is still the gold standard, but requires physically removing the ECU. With OBDII available for the S63, I'm interested in this, as I wasn't having my ECU drilled.

A quick question: does OBD flash has ALL capabilities as Bench flash or there are some limitations still?

Another question: can there be different maps/fueling etc for comfort and sport modes - essentially having 2 tunes in 1: let's say stock flash for comfort and /insert_your_brand_name/ tune for sport mode - or it's not possible due to ECU/DME structure/memory limitations?

Interesting if the factory ECM would support multiple tunes. Some ECM’s do. I have a Haltech in my TT car that I flashed 5 separate boost profiles and corresponding tunes. All activated by a rotary switch in the center consol. Position 1 is 1000rwhp (Dynodynamics, Land & Sea) position 3 is 1280rwhp. Click, click. Here is a position 3 vid

I am having the bpm sports tune on my m4 (500whb) and I love it. Sold the m4 and moving on to a x6m, for me it is sure, that I will go with bpm again.

Great service and a cheers to BPMSport

More specifically, fast Firehawk! I have one, but have been very hesitant to mod it as it's a fairly low production vehicle and I'd rather not decimate it's value.

onfireX5: Is that still the original LS1 and what have you done to it to make it strong enough for that much HP!?

I ordered it new in 99 to make it an engineering project. Stripped everything out of it mechanically, engine, trans, diff, all suspension, all fuel lines, all brake lines and all brake components, etc, etc and rebuilt it myself with all aftermarket and some custom built products. Engine is an RHS aluminum block built by my buddy (Kurt Urban) all forged stuff. I put everything back together and installed and tuned a Haltech Elite DME with traction control, height sensors for wheelie control, etc, etc. Car is DOT Street Legal for the class I race in. Have to make a 30 mile cruise and come back to the lanes with zero down time and make 3 passes without stopping. A lot of thermo learning and tech to pull that off ! Took a while, but it's been a fun project. Especially the tech learned from tuning and turbo selection (eight different turbos have been on the car for experimentation).

Here is the only picture I could scroung up quickly of my '02. Still riding on the original tires

Sorry for the thread hijack!
