Could you care to explain how my 2015 X5 with 20" high performance summer run flat tires are able to grip my 4,500 lbs suv and stick to the northern NJ asphalts at 10°F temperatures?

Could also care to explain how I am able to drive my Subaru Crosstrek with cheap all season tires in the same conditions as above AND in 6 inches of thick and heavy snow?

hmm..I've driven in single digits with all-seasons and winter rated all-terrains (goodyear duratrac wranglers) and have managed to stay firmly planted on the road. I definitely haven't felt like I was on hockey pucks...or maybe I'm just that good of a driver

Lots of mad skillz drivers on this board, what can I say. I guess all the tests on the Internet showing how much better and safer winter tires over all seasons are fake news....

Why yes I do have mad skillz. Your original statement is that “all seasons turn in to hockey pucks and do not provide any traction regardless of snow”. Please do provide details on the tests that support this. Don’t worry, I’lll wait...or are you changing your claim now?

My point is don't believe everything you read... there is always a motive for something. Tire companies like to scare people with these so that they can sell more tires. My summers never felt like a hockey puck on "Dry" pavement... I will definitely not drive my summers in snow though...

People read stuff on this forum and basically regurgitate that information to others.

That will happen with summer tires in the winter. I drove on PS2s two winters and outside of them being a bit rough in the cold, handled just fine. Snow is a different story of course.

Well redline9001 is not wrong here, temperature has significant impact on summer tire performance in cold. The degree of that impact will vary by tire though.

Dear baby jesus....I don't think anyone disagrees that winter tires would perform better in the cold.

He specifically claimed “all seasons turn in to hockey pucks and do not provide any traction regardless of snow”, then later backed off this by saying...
"I guess all the tests on the Internet showing how much better and safer winter tires over all seasons are fake news...." which is far different than the original claim.

Any recommendations or suggestions on what to get? Looking at all season that's not going to break the bank yet gives good ride comfort since that's the reason I want to get rid of runflats.

Do you think I can get away with replacing 2 rear ones with non-RF and keep the front as RF? The front ones are still in great condition.

315/35/20 rear
275/40/20 front
I was looking at the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tire. It is an N spec tire made for Porsche so should perform at a high level which is what you want for BMW. Don't have two different types of tires or mix brands at once. That is like wearing a tennis shoe and dress shoe at the same time. Either just replace the rears with the same brand and type of tire or replace all four and sell of the front two.

I recommend Toyo Proxes ST III... they ride well in dry and wet conditions and look aggressive.

Having owned a 335i with summer tires / sport package - I barely lasted the first month of winter - in sub freezing temps it was very unstable.

Simple Tire - Toyo has/had 15% off. I think it's still good right now. 732 shipped... for that price it was worth a try.

He’s absolutely right about his statements on winters vs 4 seasons. However, the effect is increasingly pronounced as the temps get colder. When it’s really cold out (-15 C or less), go squeeze your 4 season tire treads; kinda feels like glass, right? Next, go to a winter tire and do the same; hey, look at that! The rubber gives! Keep in mind that we’re in the great white north so this is much more relevant to us. To the point where, in Quebec, winter tires are mandatory during winter months.

You’re kidding right? I guess my guardian angel has been flying over me all winter keeping me on the road while driving around on hockey pucks on dry pavement.

Again, please provide proof of this phenomenon.

Uh, contact any tire manufacturer. The rubber of a winter tire is a lot softer and pliable than that of a summer. That’s why they wear out so quickly if left on when the weather warms up. That’s why a lot of kids in hopped up civics put winter tires on when they go to the drag strip. You’re in Washington state so the advantages of a dedicated winter tire are not pronounced (although there definitely still is one). The difference becomes a lot more apparent in the bitter cold. More proof? Google a car and driver article where they concluded that the shittiest winter tire is better than the best 4 season in the cold. Don’t know what more to say than that. And I wasn’t joking about my tire rubber "pinch" test.

More "proof": government of Quebec made winter tires the law. If you don’t have winters, ticket is $400. And, if you have an accident and don’t have winters during the prescribed period, insurance companies don’t cover you.
