Yes, most SSD should be fine. Another reason not to use HDD is that it will most definitely suffer from the vibrations in the car.

You guys know that USB cannot utilize the SSD speed and it's not much faster than other drives, right? Just get a USB stick and save your space. I went with Sandisk Cruze Fit http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FJRS6QY/...ing=UTF8&psc=1

However, that SSD for $22 is amazing, can that SSD be removed and used as internal drive?

Just picked up wife's 2016 x5 with the rear entertainment. Is there a guide as to which formats it will play and how to convert media to playable scale?

128GB USB

I had a 16GB USB which read perfectly in my car. After upgrading to a 128GB, I now have to unplug and plug the new thumb drive. Both are formatted to FAT32.

Does anyone out there know how to remedy this or is my thumb drive bad/too large?

Sorry to thread jack a bit, but what resolution files can the system decode. 44/16 is standard CD resolution. I have 2+ TB of hi-resolution files for the audio system. I'd like to play better resolution than the low resolution stuff on my phone. Thanks!

Here my experience, on an 2015 X5 with professional NAV system and B&O audio:

1. Both .mp3 and .flac audio files work perfectly. Flac files sound clearly better, if the original music quality is good enough.

2. a 128 GB Samsung USB "thumb drive", formatted either NTFS or FAT32, works perfectly - Sandisk brand ones seem more laggy, can't tell why.

3.. a Samsung T1 1 GB flash SSD drive works perfectly - my one stores some 3000 flac audio files and 150 movies. X5 coding allowed different (already present but not enabled) video file types to play perfectly. mp4 videos based on the H264 codec (the usual Blu Ray one) work fine, but H265 (the latest high compression 4K codec) does not seem to work.

The SSD drive uses some .1 to .3 A, easily supplied by the USB plug.

NOTE 1: allow 5 - 10 minutes for a one-time file system reading the first time you plug in a large SSD drive. You cannot access your files before that, be patient.

NOTE 2: to access your videos in the car you can use a nested (multi-level) folder system to organize the video files - but not so for the audio files and their artwork: these need careful "tagging" - you may use "Tag&Rename" or similar software to organize them. Caution: do not ever allow Tag&Rename to "organize" your video folder, it will mess it.

I have H/K system not B&O....so do you think it is the reason that I can't play FLaC and only MP3?

I just tried a 44KHz flac with H/K and it works. I will try hi-res too and report back.
