My dealer just had authorization from BMW for 4 new wheels. They’re being fitted tomorrow.

I wonder what the dealerships do with all the old wheels?

refinish and resell on ebay probably to recoup the cost.

With that said, mine also agreed to replace my wheels for free

Snap... I should get mine back today.

What's the best way to stop this happening to the replacements?

How did you end up convincing them--you show them that article I referenced?

Depends on what is actually causing the issue. If it's poor paint prep or material defect, it will happen again.

If it's an environmental issue that causes it, you can get them ceramic coated. Remove the center caps when this is done so that the inside of that area is coated as well. Most ceramic coatings have a fairly good chemical resistance.

You may also want to be sure not to use any harsh chemicals when cleaning the wheels. This will likely mean staying away from any automatic car washes if you use them.

I contacted BMWNA directly and they told me that their field mechanic upon inspection of my wheels would only refinish it as a courtesy. So I asked my SA for the manager contact information at my dealer. We came to a favorable solution to replace them.

Thanks. I always avoid the harsh chemicals, where possible. The car was 2.5 years old when I got it, so I don't know what it was subjected to in that time.

I think I'll look into the ceramic coating option.

They go back to BMW, who then send them back to the manufacturer.

There are quite a few off the shelf options that give about 2yrs of protection and some professionally installed version that can last 5+ years. Look up Cquartz, optimum gloss coat, wolfgang for off the shelf. I’ve used gloss coat and have heard good things about the others.

I've coated mine with optimum gloss and apparently it didn't help. I'm also wondering what has caused this since it isn't an isolated issue as everyone can see on this thread and a couple of other threads in the past. I wonder if the new wheels will have better or higher quality clear coat finish.

salt is the main cause. and the center hub gets scratched up every time the wheel is put on a tire balancer machine. plus moisture getting trapped behind the cap...

i think clear coats are just more prone to this issue. perhaps clears arent baked on like solid colors??

Just wondering, I just bought a 2015 x5 35i and I believe 4yr/80k is up in December. I noticed a bit of corrosion as well around the hub(have 469) does it matter what bmw dealership you take it too to try and get them replaced? Thanks

So I just had my rims refinished today and they came out amazing. Previous owner had curbed them and the clear coat was failing in some spots. Dealer did them under warranty and now you would never know they had any issue. Very pleased that I didn't have to come out of pocket for them.
Although I did buy a touch up paint pen and clear coat for a few rock chips it has, 53 dollars Canadian. :

Work was carried out as above, and now having Gators fitted next week at a cost of £100.
Anyone had any experience of Gators? They don't look too obvious and I reckon that if they work as promised then it will be money well spent.
