Question Tire & Wheel Insurance Question

Wondering if you guys have purchased the Tire & Wheel insurance from your dealer and how much did it cost? My dealer says Fidelity T&W insurance for a 2016 X6 50i is $1899??? I have paid a lot less for more expensive cars...

Have any recommendations? TIA

I bought the tire/wheel insurance when I bought my 135i years ago. But after a road trip x-country got rid of the run flat tires and got a different tire, voiding the insurance. If you like run flat tires the policy might work for you.

I opted out initially when I bought my '16 X5 w/ run flats. But after speaking with my sister who has an '13 X3 and had used the tire insurance about 6 times already, I came back the following day and convinced the finance manager to rewrite our purchase contract. They gave it to me at "dealer's cost" of $1295 plus tax.

Thanks! That sounds more reasonable! Who is this insurance by?

Virginia Surety Company but Safe-Guard Products International will be the service provider. Claims must go through BMW Assist Center.

If you add it make sure that it is through BMW and not a Third party. Last thing you want is an issue when turning in the car at the end of a lease.

Was this a BMW plan? How did you determine that changing from run flat to non-run flat tires voided the coverage?

It was the BMW plan and when I swapped the run flats for Michelins (non run flat) it voided the warranty. Oh well 135i replaced by S5.

For me it was anot easy decision as BMW Bellevue asked over $3K for tire & wheel insurance and so I laughed them in the face.

(We are talking about 19" aw tires, not some fancy performance set.)

Lol. The dealer (finance manager) initially quoted us $2500 the night we took delivery of the X5. When we opted out, he tried to sell the $3,500 dent and paint chip repair service. That's when I told him " no disrespect but it's 9pm which is already 3 hours past closing. We are not interested in any add ons, options, tire, paint, windshield, meteor, and global warming protections. Let's just finish up the paperwork and get out of here." Were were outta there 15 minutes later.

generally speaking the t&w insurance is a waste of money however on BMW it is the only way to go providing you retain the RFT tires. the combination of butter soft wheels & RFT are a great combination for damage in areas that experience road damage from the elements. on most 19-21" wheels packages you would make your money back in the first winter or post winter drive. the other option is purchase a dedicated set of winter wheels and tires without RFT and you'll be ahead of the game and have something to sell once you ditch the vehicle.

Yes, but, how did you determine that changing from run flat to non-run flat tires voided the coverage? Did someone at BMW or a dealer tell you this? Did you find something in the BMW wheel/tire protection coverage that says this (I have not found anything related to this in the contract)?

Also, if coverage is voided by changing to non-run flat tires, does that affect only the tire coverage or also the wheel coverage?

It used to be much cheaper. I get my cars from leasing companies and my guy told me after last years winter the price was right around what you got quoted. Wife drives the x5 m sport now, and i opted out and just got dedicated winter tire set up at 18". My current car is an audi s7 with 20" and it cost two years ago 600 bucks for the term of the lease. Already paid for it self two fold as i repaired, then replaced a cracked rim and a bubble in a tire. But it still hasn't come to a total over 2k, so i figured just get winter set up for around 1200 and keep switching.

Besides the price my other issue with the T&W insurance was that according to the contract it only pays for the damaged tire, and not the other one on the same axle.

this is true too. they do not replace undamaged tires despite having an awd system and different wear depths MAY affect hardware. generally speaking providing the tires are within 4% of one another there should be no issue in using a new tire with an older tire but if there is a greater discrepancy tire shaving is offered by most reputable tire shops.
