Our steering column was replaced at the end of November. So far so good and no squeaking.

Had this exact same problem twice. Two times the dealer changed steering column with a brand new one. Two times I was told this issue is super rare.. and never happened to anyone else.

That is worrying that a few of us have had it changed more than once. I was hoping a new steering column would be a long term fix.

I have heard that a software programming is the proper fix. That makes sense since replacing the column seems counterintuitive when it refuses to go up and down but will go in and put. Mine acts up from time to time, but never long enough for me to get it in the shop. Knowing me, I will trade it before it gets to be a real problem.

Mine decided to act up again (so far it only got stuck once where it moved up and down, but not in or out—but it got remedied when I restarted the ignition). My worst fear was almost realized. The steering wheel refused to come out and it wouldn't move up or down. Almost worst fear since my seats could still be adjusted and I wasn't stuck in the middle of nowhere. Nonetheless, it was an awkward drive to the dealer. Then at the dealer it decided it wanted to move in and out, but still wouldn't move up or down.

Anyways along with a new seat cover, they're going to order a new steering column for me. Current mileage at 32200 miles. "No Signal" error on iDrive so far did not come back, but my iDrive did get "stuck" a couple times, but haven't been able to replicate for dealer.

I was @ the local BMW dealership today with my X5 and they had replaced three X5 steering columns this week seems to be a common X5 problem. My steering column began to squeal and whine when moving and will only move up or down, it will not move in and out. I have since nick named it "Big Baby" part had to be ordered should be replaced next week anyone know the 411 on this?

I'm wonder how many steering wheels they're replacing. I'm told the order for mine is still on backorder.

I'll venture and say a LOT! The X5M forums have the same issues. So imagine all the owners who don't know or visit this forums or post on the subject.

This morning my steering wheel started adjusting again, so maybe that cold spell helped a bit.

Anyways hopefully it stays working until the replacement part arrives.

My steering wheel started to make a horrific noise when adjusting when the car starts up or shuts down. I called the dealership and they made me an appointment right away. How long does the steering column take to be replaced?

My column was replaced for the same reason. After I got it home I realized they either gave me a different steering wheel or really screwed up mine. Scratches and a gouge.
The wheel was dead center and now it’s off.
The steering seems lighter but not sure why.
My car has 14,000 miles on it.
Drove a Lincoln MKX and not an issue in 3 years.
Called my old Lincoln dealer and says the 2016s are going for 32 to 35K. Nice 30k depreciation in 22 months.
This will probably be my last BMW.

Nope. No Lincoln. Maybe Lexus in a few years.
I plan on keeping the X5 through the 4 year Warranty period at least.

Is there a setting in idrive that will prevent the steering wheel from raising and going forward automatically whenever you open the door? Seems like it would be less likely a problem would occur if the wheel just stays in one place. I don't feel the need to adjust it very often.

Unfortunately no option in iDrive but can easily be coded off. I was very annoyed by this "option" even before having my steering column failure. I coded it off and i am really happy without it.

Had the same issue. The dealer replaced the steering module and programmed it to the vehicle. Still did not fix the telescoping issue. Now they are going to replace the steering column. I hope it doesn't come back with other issues.
