If you are looking at performance go for 50i, otherwise go for 35i/35d. 35d will save you fuel and it's a good time to try diesel imho (not much diesel cars left on US/Canada market). 50i will be hard to drive slow and you'll get more chance of tickets, spend more on fuel (roughly 20% more), but lease is excellent for things like 50i - you don't have to worry about anything
50i is a V8 monster - you'll satisfy your hunger for acceleration Go for M Sport if looks are important to you and for LED headlights Go for DHP (Dynamic Handling Package) - if you want your x5 to handle like a sedan |

This topic has been beat to death on other threads. Here are several links, and there are plenty of others if you search for them http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...hlight=35i+50i http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...hlight=35i+50i http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...ght=35i+vs+50i http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...ght=35i+OR+50i Last edited by Chadmatic; 01-24-2018 at 08:10 PM.. |

You have to ask yourself how much you value acceleration and effortless driving and passing. My 35i was more than adequate and I enjoyed it very much and is very quick for an suv. But the 50i is simply on another level. You want to pass 4 or 5 cars on a single lane road, no problem. You want to peg 150 mph like its nothing, easy. Have to have 20" wheel option for increased spreed limiter. If you dont care about speed or necessarily accerlation the 35i is fine, but the v8 is more relaxed driving. It has so much torque, it simply oozes to speed. You honestly can't go wrong with either engine. It's all in what you want. And, I've had zero issues with my 50i. Oil changes, that's it.

Such a debatable question and answers only you can provide given your tastes and requirements. Like said above, beat to death topic, spend a couple days on here reading the countless threads on 35 vs 50 vs M...
IMO if you want good engine sound, 50. If you want raw beast power, 50. If you want to stop at the gas station a lot, 50. If you want poor MPG, 50. 35 has a more reliable engine, better MPG thus less stops at fuel station, but has no exhaust notes, even after mods, that I'd be proud of. M Sport is fantastic option. That's what I don't like about ours, it's an M Sport but 35...so we have the looks, we have the all wheel drive, but we lack the sound, and the 50's sound is something you can't buy for the 35. That being said, I can live with the 35 because I can get the sound and raw power from some of our other vehicles when I'm hungry. We are going to MPPK and Dinan the 35 though, so power will be drastically increased for a reasonable dollar-to-horsepower ratio...but still no V8 and no sound. Fine for us, we didn't buy it for that...but even with that reasoning, it would be nice to have it...but it was stolen, so robbers can't be picky people.

When in the market a few months ago, I majorly test drove 35i because I thought I would never need a 50i. But then I "accidentally" test drove a 50i and bought it on the spot. Now I forbid myself from test driving an F85/F86

And yes, don't test drive F85/86 unless you want to dig yourself a hole to jump in.

I went with 50i, so far so good. The SA from my local dealer told me the reliability of n63tu is much improved compare to the n63....

35i: efficient & elegant transportation, more than good enough for any practical purpose
X5 M: as easy to drive, sublime sound & celestial mechanics, the joy of "driving the best"... at a far higher cost 50i: halfway there, may be easier to explain to wife |

Just do not let her know about the price. Let her sit in the driver seat. I am sure that she will like the feel.

Literally every time I get in my 50i, I have zero regrets. I know that if I went for a 35i, I would constantly be wondering about the V8 power and torque.
However, when I bought mine, my intentions were for a FUN-to-drive vehicle that was also fairly practical. If I was looking for just something practical but satisfying to get me to work and back, a 35i would have been just fine. |

Closing on 9 months of 35i ownership and if there was one thing I would've changed on my original order, it would definitely be to go for the 50i.
I wouldn't mind the difference in performance if I got great mpg on the 35i but in my standard driving I average 11-12mpg, which seems to be similar to what 50i owners are getting in heavy traffic I think.

NYC driver here - had my 50i for about 2 weeks now, daily commute to Greenwich, CT round trip is about 70 miles from UWS, reverse commute so traffic isn't terrible - on eco mode for the commute usually getting approx 18 mpg pretty reasonable
