Drivetrain malfunction with RaceChip also

Sup guys,

I finally installed my Racechip GTS today and I also have the dreaded "drivetrain malfunction error". I know I installed it correct as I used Ben's instructions (thanks Ben). I also cannot get it the error to stop even with the "dummy" plug installed. It should just revert to normal with that on.
Here are some pictures.

I tried turning the car off and letting it set for an hour to no avail. Car seems to run perfectly fine with the dummy plug. I have not started with the chip settings yet other than first install I turned the car on with default setting of "5". I have the Bimmercode app but have not tried to clear the error with it (if thats possible??)

Thanks!

My racechip gave me misfires. How old are your plugs? Miles?

So I'm not sure about piggybacks, but regarding spark plugs - official BMW policy (according to BMW SA) is to change them every 5th oil change. Of course that is for stock car. Just giving the info guys - do with it what you like

When does the error occur, under partial acceleration or at wot?

lilthrift , couldn't make out if you are connected to the correct sensors from those pictures. But it is the correct location.
If you are still having trouble while the dummy plug is installed (it should clear up after engine startup or a little driving), then it could be the installation or harness issue.
Did you reinstall the air box and sensors on the airbox back in place before you start the engine?
I believe drivetrain malfunction will not give you a CEL code.

r33_RGSport, I am pretty sure I got the right connections both plugs seemed to be exact opposite sides of engine attached to a silver metal area. Tough to get my hands down by the radiator area to plug them in but got them snapped in. I never had to undo the 2 bolts in your instructions for the power steering reservoir to slide it out of the way. Heck i couldn't even find it on my engine

I did install the air box and sensors BEFORE starting the engine. I put it completely back before starting. I just hate to remove everything again but it looks like I may. If i do im going to send it back to Racechip...just not worth the hassle I am having for the few extra HP.

Error occurs on startup all the time now, even with dummy plug in. I drove the car for an hour last night. Cant tell any issues with the error as the car runs normal.

When I received my random Drivetrain Malfunction during the first few days of my RC, I had the codes in the attached picture. It only happened once and has never been back.

lilthrift do you have access to a code reader to read the pending/stored codes? Also, instead of using the dummy plug, try reverting to the stock wiring and see if that clears it up. If it does, it may be the harness.

Seems to be a few posts about the drivetrain malfunction with RaceChip lately. Is there a mod that can merge the threads or posts?

Might be good for the folks that are having this issue have one thread to troubleshoot from.

It could be installation or harness if with dummy plug still gives you error.
Try to reset it while using the dummy plug and see if it comes back.

Forgive my ignorance but how do you reset it?

I have an OBD II with BimmerLink and BimmerCode apps. Will BimmerLink read error codes?

I saw a post before about the op let the indy mechanic to install Racechip for 50I and got error code. He insist that the mechanic have experience and should not install it wrongly. But in fact, the mechanic did installed it into the wrong connector. Later on, he uninstall everything and connect it to difference connentor. Wow , it work with no code. Maybe you can search other post to see what he did.

It should. I never used it.
Any OBD2 scanner should be able to read and clear.

Ok I removed the Racechip harness and reconnected everything back correctly and I still have the drivetrain error. Unless it goes away tomorrow i will get an apt with the dealership.

I am sending the Racechip back for a refund. Thanks for all the help in this forum but just too many unknowns and i am tired of removing/reinstalling everything

I understand your frustration, but have you checked error codes with your Bimmercode? It could be something very simple that you are overlooking

According to their website, yes it will. I do not have an iPhone (and bimmerlink looks like it's for iOS only) so I can't help you with that app. I use Dash Command. Super easy. Once you connect it to your OBD reader, you simply press diagnostics then read codes. Simple as that. I assume bimmerlink is just as easy.

I know your frustration as all you wanted was a little extra oomph with piggyback and it’s giving you problems you don’t want or need! At this point since you removed it and have to get it checked out why don’t wait to see what was causing it and give the Racechip one more shot and if it still doesn’t it send it back. Good luck
