How Will New X5 Model Affect F15 Value?
I read today that a new X5 model is going to be released later this year (2018).
How will these new models affect the re-sale value of current F15s? Is now a good thing me to sell to prevent a sudden dip in value? Or do older models hold their re-sale despite new models? |

You have a 2015. Remember, you'll never "win" by owning an X5. Values of these plummet, no matter what. Just go look over in the E70 section and ask the guys with X5Ms how they are faring. You wouldn't want to be in their shoes.
Age, miles, new models being released, it's always something. Is the new X5 going to slash used F15s in half? Of course not. But it won't help either. Besides, what will your X5 fetch today? I can run the VIN and I'll tell you. |

BMW and most European cars drop in value steeply than the Japanese counterparts...
These days anyone can own a slightly used BMW.

These cars are built to drive, love, tinker with, and lose money. That’s what they do.

You can gauge how badly your resell value will be effected by how much dealers are currently able to discount new units. Hypothetically speaking if someone owns a 2017 currently and dealers are discounting 2018 units at fire sale pricing why would anyone consider a used 2017 unless the price tag was attractive enough otherwise you would just go for the new 2018. If dealers aren't budging on pricing for 2018 models because this is the "last run" then values will hold well for the interim. Another factor is the public opinion of the upcoming model currently and when released. When the new Discovery was debuted it was not well received and it made values of the LR4 skyrocket even used units currently sell for sticker or higher depending on the options or trim level.

Massive depreciation was expected but still painful.
Bought my X5 last May brand new at $65k and I went to my local Audi dealer around December time and they would only give me $40k for trade-in. However, that trade-in price did include an accident I had with a deer.

Having owned several BMWs while also owning a new Toyota 4Runner (4th Gen and 5th Gen), 4Runners hold their values amazing, but they are also appliances and boring to drive. My last 4Runner was a 5th Gen Limited. 3 years and 21,XXX miles of ownership and I lost $4.5k.
I’ve been around the marque for over 30 years. New BMWs have never had an outstanding track record in regards to depreciation. If that is what you are seeking then I suggest purchasing a vintage BMW. |

I considered a few months ago trading my 2017 35d in for another G-Class (we just love the crazy G, lol). My car had about 3000 miles. MSRP for my 35d was about $74.5k.
Dealer offered me MAYBE $50k and that was pushing it :-O The G-Class and full size Range Rover are really the only two, high end European cars that somewhat keep their value. X5, 7 Series, S-Class, X5, SL....horrible, horrible depreciation |

Getting the BMW extended warranty is a wise move even if you do not ever really put it to serious use. You’ve got the security of having it and that is of upmost importance with any BMW out of factory warranty. |

I feel bad for the fellow who paid $67,000 new for my X5. I went behind him 2 short years and 30k miles later and got it for $39,900.

This thread is sad but true. I am going on my 4th BMW, and this will be the first that I leased. The reality is though that you need to own them a long time to make buying remotely worth it, and I ideally like a new fancy vehicle every 4-5 years. I also don’t like dealing with costly repairs. I’m a finance guy for a living, and my love of nice cars is about the dumbest thing financially that I could do.
My wife had a CRV when we were dating. Kept that for around 3 years and it barely lost any value, but like others said — boring. OP, your X5 is probably down around 40 percent in price since you purchased. It will drop more whether the new one comes out or not, so I personally wouldn’t let that guide my decision. |

I remember when BMW (M products at least) retained the most value and Audi dropped like a rock minute by minute. Now it seems the opposite but the king is still MB/AMG.

The BMW that has always depreciated the most has been the 7-Series. Their owners get hammered.

YUP. We have had four 7 Series....and the depreciation is dreadful. They are really great cars though, that perform and handle freakishly good for their size & weight!
Honestly though, S-Class is not much better. Look at the value of older S55 and S65 sedans. Shocking!!! |
