Same here. I grabbed my 29,000 mile 2015 X35i m-sport with a $81k MSRP for $39,900 about 3 months ago. Beautiful condition 1 Owner car.

My 2017 M50d was 3 months old when I got it, and I paid the equivalent of $38k less than retail for it. With 3000 miles on the clock. I’m happy with that!

OMG!! Wow, that is a huge savings. It seems that none of us will be able to trade our F15s in early. There is no value Cannot blame the X5, this is the case with almost every luxury car. Again, Mercedes G-Class, Full Size Range Rover and the Porsche 911 do have amazing retained value though!

I don't even look anymore at what our cars are going for now. To me its worth the depreciation to have something that fits the family but is also a lot of fun. Not many cars can do that the way this one does.

Cars are just a small portion of our life. Yet I'm happy I have opportunity to drive a car like x5 (especially 50i). I've never had such powerful or expensive cars before. I'll probably never buy a car that expensive after my 6 year financing ends. Not because I won't be able to afford one, but because I'll have other things to worry (kids education, mortgage, study debt repayment etc). I may see myself driving a shitty Toyota, but at least I won't have regrets as I've experienced what it's like to drive a $87k mrsp BMW car. I satisfied urge for power and acceleration. I satisfied my modding urge. This x5 checked many of my "to do" things in a "to do before I kick the bucket list". I think it will serve me well in upstate NY winter and will be a good family car too. After 6 years of financing are done I'll leave it as a family winter beater car. It's important to live within your means, but it's also important to not be afraid to spent money on things you like. For what this x5 already gave to me - it's money well spent imho. I don't care how much it costs now or how much it will depreciate - I bought it to enjoy and I'm happy. I'm keeping it, not going to trade in or sell it - it will be in a family, even if a 3rd car. I'll just leave it in the garage and in 30 years it may be a classic car in a EV world lol. I'll show my kids what it was like to own a BMW V8. Everyone has their own story and life of course.

I have a 04 X5 with a 146k on the clock and just started putting money into it. Will not get rid of and am currently using as a DD. Just purchased a 14 35I for 30k with 46k on it and will drive for a considerable time. I also have a 09 F01 in excellent condition with a new engine and will hold onto now for a few more years. I bought my wife a 11 335I convertible with 46k last year. Love the BMW brand and will continue to purchase brand. Also the 09 is my 5th 7 series and I never purchase new because I can't afford it and will not take on the depreciation up front. I sold cars in my previous life and saw first hand how people got hammered on trade ins.

By the way, I have a set of Pirelli Scorpion winter/snow 20 inch tires with 4k on them I switched out for some DWS06. Should I put them on forum for sale?

The real drop in value will happen when there is g05 in the used market. We have a number of years before you really need to worry

I know quite a few have PMd me their VINs in order to get auction values. Happy to run those.

Need:
- VIN
- miles
- condition (out of 5)
- region of country you are in
- color of vehicle

Vehicles are not assets, which is why I buy used to cut my eventual loss. It does cost $ to own/lease. For people who like to trade every 2,3, or 4 years I say lease a vehicle. Its what you are doing anyway except you are leasing it from yourself, not the manufacturer and therefore you accept the actual value at trade/sell time. I think that is known as the residual value.

I was talking to a friend of mine over drinks the other day, who also happens to be my financial adviser. He tells me every single one of his wealthy clients leases their vehicles. Is it because it makes the most financial sense? Is it because they can write it off? Is it because they just want zero hassle when it comes to car maintenance?

I think a good middle ground could be to buy a reliable SUV that you can rack the miles up on that's worry free to own (Lexus, Toyota) and then lease a "fun" car.

Garage List
When the new X5 drops, I think I'm going to get a Mercedes G63... I really like that car. The old was a bit cramped inside, the new one I hear is much more spacious.

I can't think of anyone I know that leases. I do finance to write it off each year.

This is a good point. I was thinking about this question myself as I am looking into some CPO F15.

I cannot wait to get a 2018 X5M CPO in 2020. The new X5 is ugly as hell, so this will be the last best X5M.

The big ass grills...and based on the X3, X2, and other G series and from the camo'ed cars we can make a fairly good assumption. The same reason why I kept my lease and didn't want the G series X5.

Only time will tell. I am going to give BMW the benefit of the doubt and see what the final production model looks like before make my opinion.
