I personally always swap out full sets but if someone isn't going to be driving the vehicle hard and pushing the tires to the limits, I think they'll be just fine with mismatched tires front to rear.

Yes the car definitely doesn't care if the $400 Dunlops up front don't match the $300 Contis on the rear.

Now, for driving enthusiasts, I'd suggest something other than an X5...or at least an ///M if you require an SUV. I guess a tuned 50i if you can't afford or justify the cost of the ///M.

Our xDrive35i is certainly not for driving enthusiasts (it's not a light SUV, it only has a 300hp 6 banger, and its OEM exhaust sounds like a lawnmower)...

I'm confident I could push this vehicle to its limits with mis-matched rubber and never suffer a consequence.

A mass-produced SUV that can be found in every parking lot and suburban driveway is hardly a driving enthusiast's car in my opinion (which probably isn't a popular opinion on an X5 forum, but to each their own).

I'm a full set changer myself...only I'm not throwing away several hundred dollars of rubber to have matching tread patterns. These rigs are tire shredding beasts, so I'll only be mismatched for a short time. My deal with being on the same tread pattern is for aesthetics and slightly improved straight line handling on the freeway where grooves/ruts in the road may affect the tires a bit differently...but mostly for appearance.

Besides, a 35i driven to it's limits wouldn't matter...unless you're racing on a road course, how the hell would the soccer mom SUV know the difference?

As far as I'm concerned, a 35i cannot push the Dunlops or the Contis to their limits...unless you're destroying your rig at the same time. This vehicle doesn't have nearly the power or handling performance required to push these tires over the limit.

Those with tuning, bigger engines, dynamic handling, etc., who drive VERY hard, maybe, perhaps, a slight notice of mismatched tread, but even that is a stretch to imagine outside of competitive events.

Get dedicated summer rubber if you have space to store dedicated winter rubber...

I've ran different brand tires a few times before. Pushed hard, no problems
