IMO DWS is overrated...

I prefer as you've mentioned the boxy look of the wide tires aesthetically and the DWS tread pattern doesn't appeal to me.

I’m running Toyo Proxes ST and I really like them. Not only do I like the ride quality, but I also like the tread pattern.

Overrated?
If someone wants tires they can drive year round in the winter, want a smoother ride, and don't want to replace worn out tires after 15k miles, the dws06 is a great choice.

The circumstances should be the same runflat vs non-runflats
I'd recommend not mixing brands & RF/non-RF. My suggestion would be to find a used tire of the same brand either on ebay or craigslist with similar wear as your current set, so you can continue using the set that has 60% tread life.

Tirerack has some nice articles on tire replacement for AWD vehicles.

DWS06 are incredible for areas with light snow, like most of PNW. I love them on mine.

I think so... I've got two friends with an X5 that tell me DWS06 sucks in the snow due to the tires being wide...

I would prefer summer tires and winter and look good too.

I'll probably be in the same boat too when my R/F's wear down. While I don't want a pure summer tire (even though I live in FL) I don't need an All Season that excels in snow. My priorities will be ride, handling and road noise.

In a somewhat related question, for my run flats, 36psi for front and 44psi for rear is recommended. I assume that's so high because they are run flats. If you make the jump away from run flats, how do you know the proper psi?

cool cool. I actually agree that the tires with the square shoulders do look better. My summer setup look that way, the winter setup (469 w/ DWS06) definitely do not look as good.

+1 DWS 06

I am in the Seattle area, light snow. Been running DWS 06 and DWS for about 10 years. my 06 E53 had Michelin Diamaris (horrible tires) replaced them with Conti DWS haven't looked back. I still drive both my X5's with them in the light snow we have and up to the ski area's, no problems in the snow. I even have Pirelli Scorpions in the garage and I never switch them out any more.

He is referring to where the sidewalll meets the tread , when it’s more square it make the tread width wider and the ones that are a little rounder in that area have a slightly narrower thread width hth.

In case you are in the market, discount tire direct is having $100 off $400 on Dws06 through ebay with PMOTORS318 code. You have to put in 2 separate orders(front and back separately) to maximize your savings.

+1 for the DWS 06. We've now had them on the X5 for two "winters" here in the midwest (I think the most snow they've seen is 3-4") and they are doing just fine. I've got about 25K miles on them and down to about 6/32" tread left so will probably replace them before next winter. I figure I'll get 30-35K miles out of them, which I'm OK with. A bit different than I've experienced in the past....I got the full 60K miles out of Michelins on my CRV, but different car, different tire, different application.

I'm not overly worried about the "look", although I can certainly understand and appreciate the difference between rounded vs. square shoulders. The DWS's were a few $$ less than equivalent Michelins, and I'm not interested in using RF's.

Remember it’s not about snow per say but temperature. At colder temps all seasons turn into hockey pucks and do not provide any traction regardless of snow etc... for you guys further south temps might not be a big factor. The colder it is the more I would stay away from all seasons or all weathers and run full winters

Maybe up in Canada , I have run all seasons on my x3 and now x5 through the winter and no problems at all . I do agree that a winter tire would obviously be better, but the all seasons work and I’m in the northeast which does see a fair amount of snow.
