X5d noticeable changes over the past 3 years
I had a 2015 X5d and now a 2018 X5d. Main difference is X-Line (2015) vs MSport with Adaptive M (2018).
I can definitively say I have experienced the following differences: 1. There is now more of a "diesel" sound coming from the engine. The 2015 sounded like a regular gasser, the 2018 does not. When you stand outside next to the X5 you hear the difference, not from inside the car. 2. The 2018 has more lag (turbo lag?) when starting from a stop or when passing. It is not bad, but noticeable. I wonder if this has anything to do with the VW emissions scandal. I know BMW came out of dieselgate clean and clear, but I wonder if they made any tweaks to be extra careful. I still love the X5 but thought I would share my experience. |

I agree with you totally in both opinions!

I've been extremely happy with my 2014 and 2017 35d's. The 2014 seemed to have a little more "snap" off the line, but there's nothing to complain about with the 2017. I think they modified the transmission programming at some point to allow smoother shifts in comfort mode. I loved the 2014 shift logic, and the 2017 is fine - but not quite as good. The 2014 bridged the gap between comfort and sport on the 2017, and always seemed to be in the right gear for me. With the newer car, occasionally comfort is one gear too high and sport one gear too low in situations like part throttle acceleration coming out of a turn. Admittedly, this is nitpicking. The 2017 is still among the best automatics I've driven.
By the way, the 2017 is far superior in other ways - especially the voice recognition software.

Compared to my 2011 35d, my 2017 35d has MUCH, MUCH lower diesel sound. I honestly wish my '17 sounded more like a diesel. I personally love the sound, and makes the X5 sound robust and bigger than it is.
F15 transmission is leaps and bounds better than E70 X5 tranny! 2018 BMW diesels are cleared for sale in the USA....it seems (so far) BMW did not cheat like VW Group and Mercedes. BMW and Jaguar/Land Rover are truly 'clean' diesels! |

Seems only the non-USA 550d models. And so far, it does not appear to be any "cheat software".

Yes but that's a bit apples and oranges. The 2014 diesel engine was much more refined than the 2013 and earlier one. And the ZF 8-speed transmission is a game-changer. It makes the F15 35d almost as fun as my E70 50i.

I had an E70 4.8i. Did they make a 50i E70?!
Yes, 2014 F15 engine is very refined, and the transmission is divine. E70 tranny on my 4.8i felt brutal at times. |

Yep, they offered a 50i with N63 and a ZHP 8-speed from 2011-2013.
