Surround View (5DL) Post Production Installation Possible?

Hey guys. So, the drawbacks of buying a car on the BMW lot is that we miss out on some really nice features that make us regret not building our cars. I really wish I built mine, lol.

I have the rear parking assist camera and PCD sensor aid installed. I really like the surround view option that many of you have talked about and shown pictures of. I think it's really helpful technology.

Is there any way to retrofit or install the three other cameras in order to allow surround view to work if I didn't have it factory installed? Is the new X5 pre-wired for this if rear-view camera was factory installed? If so, do you guys have any suggestions where to take it and how much it would cost?

I don't want to do some cheap aftermarket junk where I have to buy a separate monitor. I prefer buying OEM parts so that everything is OEM installed if possible. Let me know, thank you!

I think it may cost too much to retrofit to BMW specifications. My thought is that, while the surround is nice, the backup camera is more than sufficient.

Yeah, it helps, but I like knowing what's directly around me esp when parking in the garage since we have kids' bicycles/random equipment in there.

How about if you are parking in a city and truck is kept outside? Do you still think there is a need? Does standard rear view also have top view?

I think it's helpful for parallel parking on the street to see where your car is in relation to the curb and front and rear parked cars. To me personally, I can do it all without cameras, but it just speeds things up when parking when you have more EYES . No, the the standard rear view does not have top view, which is referred to as surround view - my whole purpose for creating this thread is because I want that top view feature since it did not come factory installed on my car.

I gotcha, my current truck, QX56, has both and it wasn't an option. Clever to make it an add on because I agree, while not essential! its nice to have.

I'm guessing you have the newer shape of the QX56 since almost all new Infiniti SUVs have that nice feature. We have an '05 QX56 and it only has a backup camera with sensors/sound. There's no surround view for it, lol. The one nice thing about Infiniti is they have so many top features like BOSE and cameras as standard.

True opasha, but they have pretty much two packages to choose from and that's it. At least with BMW you can pick and choose and pay for what you want and need.

True. There are def pros and cons to both brands. At least they're not like Porsche where you have to pay an arm and a leg to actually have a decent build since the bone stock versions have absolutely nothing in them, lol.

Anything is possible if you have the $$$ to make it so. Surround View has been retrofitted to other vehicles. The F15 would be no different. But it will likely be cost prohibitive as you'd need the front camera, mirror cameras, control module, etc. The mirror bases would be need to be replaced.

You'd also need a new front bumper with the cutout for the camera. Or, it might be possible that BMW scored the inside of the bumper with drill locations as they do on cars without PDC. Then you'd just need the camera plus mounting bracket.

I helped a friend do this on his F10. It was around $3500 all in I recall.

Thank you for the detailed response, my friend . It does seem like a costly job. It's probably not worth it. I do plan on keeping the car for a long time, so perhaps down the road I may look into this option.

I have three questions for you, wdimagineer, if you would be so kind to shed some light.

First, myself and another asked in the coding sheet thread if the fog lights can be turned on by default when the headlights are on instead of having to turn them on every time via the "fog light" button. Do you know if this is possible in coding?

Second, do you also know if there is a way to make Eco Pro mode the default start up setting? I find that Eco Pro actually drives tighter/better than comfort (not in rev/speed response, but I don't need that on all the time).

Third, if Eco Pro default is possible, is there a way to turn off the Auto Start/Stop function by default for Eco Pro? I already have it coded to be off by default for Comfort mode.

Thank you .

Please don't. Maybe you can answer my question. Why? What has happened to the typical American driver that they think they need their fog lights on all the time. It doesn't help others see you better... if they don't see you with your headlights on, they aren't going to see you. If it's not foggy or rainy, it doesn't help you see any better. Is it a cool thing... people think it looks cooler? More intimidating? I don't get it.
Sorry, don't mean to single you out. Just one of my many pet peeves re US drivers.

No problem at all, bro . It's actually for better visibility, personally. I'm also one of those drivers that never drives with high beams on against oncoming traffic. I changed the fog lights on all of my SUVs because it helps quite a bit. I live in an area with a lot of backroads - I've hit two deer before with my FX35 and my custom fog lights (6000K HID Xenon) helped me see in time to slow down from 50 to 30-40mph. Both times ironically 3 years apart around 6 deer sprinted across the road at night and I hit the last one as I pumped my brakes. Luckily, no one was hurt and no damage to the car (this solidified my faith in my FX35 as a strong vehicle - I hit the deer head on - the first time the deer did a 360 and got up and ran off - the second time, 5 ran across and the last one randomly leaped in front but I was able to see from the corner of my eye due to the peripheral field of light the fogs provided). I felt really bad for the deer, but luckily both times, they were alive without any external injuries that I could see as they got up to run away.

Crappy fogs may not help cars. However, high quality ones, especially the LED fogs of the BMW X5 provide greater peripheral lighting. If you haven't realized it already, go outside at night in a very dark area, turn on the LED fogs, and you'll see how much more light output to the sides it provides.

Thanks for the feedback, and I hope I was able to answer my reasoning for wanting to have them on instead of having to always push the button .

Unfortunately no to all three questions.

The fog lights can't be coded to come on automatically since they're only designed to be used when necessary and not all the time per road laws in various countries.

There isn't a way to code the default driving mode. Some want Eco Pro, some want Sport/Sport+. I see BMW's logic here but don't necessarily agree with it.

And ASS is an integral part of Eco Pro along with the engine and climate control settings. I can see why it can't be coded off.

Sorry. I wish I had better news for you.

That's quite, alright. That makes sense. Thank you for the information
