This is just icing on the cake. Whether you like the idea of a high performance SAV, the X5/X6M are just technological/engineering marvel given the type of car it is.

Cause it sucks?

Seriously, it does not compare to the one above - at least not to me and I have the new one. It is like a video game.

This is awesome news. The automatic in my X6M is amazing, for an automatic. But I won't lie, the fact that it's an M car with an automatic and not at least a DCT was a bit of a concern when I ordered the beast.

Future owners of F86 X6M will be very happy!

I'm surprised how many people dislike the current torque converter. That transmission is the best automatic transmission i've ever tried, even better than the 8HP. Very intelligent, no lag, no jerkyness. Definitely a huge plus for the M SUV IMHO.

Maybe they are saving those for the LCI model

Had the chance to spend some time in a X5M last year and IMO the AT in the old X5M and X6M adds a nice bit of comfort to those M SUVs and let you have fun when you want to. The smoothness of the ride and shifting is great, in fact the overall ride quality is better than the regular X5 50i I tried (which did not have AD).

While the M SUVs are great performers, I think the target customers are less performance minded than those who buy M3/M4/M5/M6, and a smooth yet fun to drive AT make more sense in such vehicles....I know the DCT in the newer M5/M6 are very good, but I have yet to see any DCT type transmission as smooth as a good traditional AT.

Maybe it makes sense financially for BMW to put a DCT in the new X6M since it will very likely share the same S63Tu engine, and they can save money on developmental cost of fitting an AT into the car. But if I have the choice between AT and DCT in a M SUV, I'd go with AT.

Although I,m not yet sold on the X6M, I love the DCT pairing.

The DCT in D mode is just a smooth as the 8at which is currently being used. The addition of the DCT will make the X5/6M that much more engaging/flexable to drive. When you want to lumber and don't want to shift, put it in D mode, when you want to drive it with some spirit, S it is.

I drove a x5 with paddle shifters as a loaner and I drove with the paddles the entire time, mostly from my paddle habit from my M3. Yes it was nicer than my 550 MSport with paddles but I still felt it was different and not as crisp as a DCT.

My wife only drives my M3 in 2 different D modes. D2 around town and I have the M button set for D4. I asked her how she liked it compared to her 8at and she thought it was indistinguishable to her. The only time she new the difference was when she was in D4 and needed to hustle it a bit and felt the car was always in go mode instead of go... Shift... Shift and go again.

they should put bigger turbos on this engine so that they can run at lower boost like the ml 63.

Don't know but personally I hate all digital instrument clusters. Feels too...fake, disconnected. How do I really know the digital needle is in sync with engine? It's just an animation.

BMW is one of the rare manufactures that knows how to arrange the upshift and downshift position on the console shifter. Down for upshift, Up for downshift. Audi and Porsche are A$$ Backwards.

LF-A necessitates an all digital tach. The mechanical tach couldn't keep up with the motor to accurately display the correct RPM. That's just the direction everything is going, sadly.

I wonder what they are having up their sleeves regarding the engine.
Same as the M5/M6 engine hence the identical instrument cluster. Should be sub 4 sec 0 to 60 easy.

Land Roer Nordschleife time

That Land rover SVR starting at $110K in the US is boasting of an 8:14 on the Nordschleife but that's only 10 seconds above a stock 2011 X5M. I am thinking 2015 F85 X5M will bust that pretty hard? I couldn't find any listed times online for the F85 or F86 prototypes but I have to suspect they will way outperform that Rover and for less cash too? I like the BMW style and comfort more anyway, Rovers never fit me well personally so I will probably get the X5M either way but I am curious how much the performance difference will be.

Then you have not driven a current DCT. In auto mode it would be almost imperceptible that it is a DCT. the point is if you at buying a ///m based vehicle, I want to have the control a DCT not to mention the ability to go "auto" mode.

My wife drives my car in auto mode exclusively and she likes it better than her AT.

I just heard the same thing from my dealer. They don't have the full equipment list but they have apparently been told it'll be the 8 speed slush box.

That's too bad, I was really hoping for the DCT; I'm not a fan of the AT on the E70 x5m at all.
