Glad you are ok.

I am assuming BMW NA is all over this .... its not often that new cars just catch on fire for no apparent reason.
I'm going to wait before lawyering up. I'm sure they will reach out.

Car stock. Just last week my dealership installed a Dinnan exhaust. Other then that completely stock. Never have touched my car. All dealership work. Was just in last week for second service.

Wow!

#1 Glad your OK and made it out of there, could have gone all kinds of wrong and fast. As you already know, the smoke is what gets you first in a case like that. Wow!!

Showed this to the wife and she was like "WTF" the doors wouldn't open!?!?!?

Going to have to test this out in the garage with the car off. I always thought that a Double-Pull of the handle would open the door.

Having been in a family associated with the Fire Dept. my whole life, I have one of the Orange Hammers in each car just in case. It has a little hammer and a seat belt cutter, but something I hope I never have to use.

Again, glad that your OK.

Thanks for the kind words. Glad I'm not dead right now. Thought I was going down...

All my cars will have the hammer. Yeah the double pull didn't work for me. It was terrifying. I am lucky my family and dog weren't in the car. Totally spooked.

I'm glad you're ok. I hope it isn't the ASD plug. Did you have yours unplugged?

That is crazy! Glad you are safe. I carry one of this all the time. One for every key fobs. It's a glass punch and seatbelt cutter. Best lifesaving tool I have in my pocket.

My ASD wasn't unplugged. It was all in tact. No need to worry about that Gents. What they did say is that they think it started near the battery area.. not sure about that..

I do have to give props to my local dealer.. They are giving me a 100% refund for original purchase of the car plus any extras i bought... If i wanted a BMW again they have my loyalty however Im no longer driving a BMW.

Looking at the 2017 GLE 63 AMG S or the 2017 Porsche Cayenne Turbo...

All cars go up in flames, glad you are okay

It anit easy to break a window, I've hit it-with an axe multiple times still no break, think of it as plywood, best tool is a spring loaded punch. The front we saw out

Glad everything turned out ok for your, despite the smoke inhalation. Very curious as to the cause of this as well, as I have the same car. Well most of us on this forum have the same car. What dealer are you dealing with? Very scary indeed...

I'll let you know how it all turns out and what the actual cause is. They are putting an investigation together to find the cause.

Terrifying is an understatement. I'm glad you made it out of the car and I hope you're recovering well. Keep us updated on what BMW NA says about the underlying issue.

Thought it was a X5 I passed and got onto southbound I5 off 99 yesterday morning. I think I've seen you around in University place/Fircrest if I'm not mistaken at random.

For sure want to know what BMW does for you.

I've been a life long BMW NW buyer and have had them install performance parts in house for me for years on multiple cars so I'm really glad you made it out. Especially how the doors wouldn't release.

I'm curious as to why you'd rather be burned alive than break a window to get out of the car...

Just for reference no ones burns alive, you pass out from the smoke and die

If you pour an accelerant on you in the open yes but it's super hot gases that burn your lung and throat so its fairly quick. It anit pretty and don't recommend it

Yeah that was men. I was at the corner of Pacific HW and Port of Tacoma Road by the Shell Station.

I have had a relationship for years with BMW NW. Had several BMW's as well. Manfred the owner of BMW NW just gave me a ring and is going to make me whole and Deal with BMW NA personally which makes me feel better. He said all he cares about is my health and that I am made whole for the vehicle . Will let you know how it all turns out.

Holy crap! I'm glad your ok!

If I was the dealer I would be sweating bullets. You don't want to upset people who have the means to buy six figure cars and risk their lives.

Thanks Very much. The owner of the dealership called me personally and we chatted. All he cares about is that i am doing ok and get better. Made me feel better about the situation. The BMW NA area manager is calling me on Monday as well. I will keep you all updated.

I did some research and looks like the E70 X5 and 5 Series and 6 Series models built between 2003 and 2010 were susceptible to catching on fire, but owners of several different models sprinkled here and there were also victims of this electrical problem. Cars can catch fire even when the ignition is off. This is pure madness and nonsense. I am scared of parking the X5 inside the garage :/
