adhesive removal

Recently acquired an X5M that came with spoilers ínstaled. They are not my style and was able to remove both spoilers today only to find they were installed by a bozo. There was some thin double sided tape around the edges, but on the body of both pieces there appears to be some industrial adhesive used to secure them.

Now that both pieces are removed (and for sale). I’ve got blobs of adhesive stuck all over the paint.

Any ideas on removing without needing a new paint job?

(Also posted on the X5M board)

I would think anything strong enough to remove the adhesive will damage the clear coat/paint. My guess is even if you were to get it all off, you will see those circles in the clear coat/paint.

Heatgun/hairdryer and WD40 would be first thing to try for me, but if this is some industrial adhesive removing it would cause clear coat damage which you might be able to polish off. Worst case scenario you will have to repaint the upper door.

Gotta be honest, I don't think that's coming off without damage to the paint underneath. Best of luck but I think you should go into this expecting to repaint the areas.

That adhesive is just on the factory shade?

How about searching for a used one on eBay in your same color?

I just can't fathom the thought of actually spending $ on stupid eBay/Chinese shit spoiler mods like these, which look like crap, and then adhering them to a (when new $110K+ vehicle) beautiful X5M with some industrial adhesive, just because your too dumb and lazy, and can't figure out the proper way to install.

Though, considering there they came from, maybe there was no professional way to install?

Confirmation why stock/non-modded vehicles are so desirable.

I saw your reply in the other post, so yeah it's definitely windshield urethane. There isn't much in this world that will remove it, if you could scrape it with a razor blade well lubed with a spray bottle of soapy water or glass cleaner so that you only have a thin layer remaining, then get that remaining layer with lacquer thinner which will still take a good amount of elbow grease.. Obviously there's a chance the razor blade with cause paint damage so you may not be comfortable with that method, but really its the only way..

Love this idea. Any thoughts on where I can get a part number for this?

It's on the hatch too but not nearly as bad.. Maybe if he could find a used spoiler in the same color (eBay or car-part.com) he could then just attempt to remove the adhesive from the metal hatch, if the paint is damaged he could just reapply the bottom spoiler, or search for a nicer bottom spoiler..

I was able to get all the epoxy (or whatever it is) off the hatch with a razor blade and rubber wheel. The paint isn’t in the greatest of shape after. I’m thinking a little paint restoration with west sanding and a clear might do the trick. I’ll get a picture tomorrow.

The shade got the same treatment, but the paint pealed up in a couple places.

Trying to decide if I want to vinyl the roof and rear shade or buy a shade on eBay.

Thoughts?

Got some pictures from yesterdays work. Looks 100% better, but admittedly that was a low bar.

Starting to think that even if I vinyl the roof, the shade is going to need some work to smooth out the paint. Probably better to just paint it or buy one on eBay.

That’s just criminal - why oh why do people do this to a beautiful ($$$) car? Hope it works out with minimal damage / cost! Sigh…

Again, painful to see . Someone really good with paint (I’m thinking shops who do reconditioning work for dealerships) might have some success with that. There are some pretty magical solutions if you have the experience.

Trunk lid can MAYBE be saved with a good sanding and polish. Upper part is thankfully plastic so it will never 100% match the adjacent pieces, even from factory. That can be resprayed or replaced fairly easily.

You're not saving that hatch with a cut and buff, it'll look way better but even in the pic I can see some scratches that penetrate the clear coat.
