Need help with Front and Rear Diff Fluid Types
Hello everyone.
I am a new proud owner of a 2018 BMW X5 Xdrive35i in Imperial blue metallic. Currently at 55k miles. I will be doing maintence items soon such as spark plugs, filters, and transmission fluid but specifically I wanted to get some clarity on the acceptable fluid types for the front and rear diffs. I know that BMW specific fluid is called out as: Front Diff = G2 Hypoid Differential Fluid (SAE 75W-85) Rear Diff = G3 Hypoid Differential Fluid (SAE 70W-80) However I was wondering due to the costly price of BMW specific fluid at about $60 per 500ml, I wanted to see if I can use Liqui Moly GL5 75W90 for the front and back diffs? The price on FCP Euro is $50 for two one liter bottles. Just curious if this makes a big difference. Also open to suggestions and any other maintenance items I should be aware of. I plan keeping my X5 for a long time. Please let me know. Thank you for your time! |

Read this thread if you haven't already:
https://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=157193 I changed my front diff with the Liqui Moly GL5 75W90. I personally planned to use the same on the rear diff but I can't guarantee if that is good/safe alternative to the BMW G3. Seems like the different viscosity may have a slight effect on fuel economy. |
