What are those merging orange lines with an arrow either side?

Just taken delivery of my new X5. Love it.

However I can't find out what these mean? Two parallel lines that get closer but there are two arrow which show up either together, separately, etc.

What do they mean?

I can't find the answer anywhere else.

They're the Lane Departure warning system. I believe they're part of the Active Driving Assistant, which is part of the Driver Assistance Plus pkg in the US.

The arrows indicate which lane markers the system is able to detect. The system can't always determine the lane on both sides.

Such a strange option IMO...do you really need bells and lights telling you that you're wandering in the lane? If so, maybe these drivers shouldn't be on the road. Haha!

And the system won't put you back into the lane!

With all of these sensors, the car should've been able to drive by itself.
I don't know what they are waiting for.
- Lane Departure warning
- Blind spot warning
- All around view camera
- Speed limit info
- Park Assist
- Active Cruise Control
- Distance Control

All you need just a software to utilize those information and let the car drives by itself. It can follow the route from the GPS input and reroute by itself when there is traffic.
Life would be much easier.

But think how boring that would be!

I wouldn't mind if my car drove itself during peak traffic time. Taking a 30 minute nap in my car with the A/C on while it's driving me home, now that's enjoying the ride.

I retrofitted Traffic Jam Assist for this very reason. 2 fingers on the wheel and good to go up to 25 MPH. Makes my morning SF city commute pretty awesome.

How did you retrofit this ?
I just got my car coded and left that option out.

What exactly does it do different other than what I have now which is stop and go in traffic.

Lane departure is pointless. The only positive is that you can turn it off and/or you'll just get used to it after a while.

That said, I was really anti-driving aid at first but I think I've learned to really like some of the new systems.

Blind spot monitoring - very helpful though I don't know why BMW needed to deviate from industry standard in terms of warning notification and brightness.

Surround view cameras - really nice for parking in tight spots or for parallel parking, especially given the X5's bulk. Cross traffic cams/warnings aren't as helpful as I thought they would be but they're still a decent feature.

Speed limit info (and HUD overall) - thought it terribly unnecessary at first but now surprised by how much I miss it when I drive something without it.

Active cruise/distance control - I don't think I'm ready to take that plunge yet but I have a feeling that when I do I may actually like it.
