Twin Turbo vs. TwinPowerTurbo
I had no idea my 2011 35d was a Twin Turbo I6, and my 2017 is a single turbo I6, but.....
What does it mean, under the hood on my engine cover, '17 35d: TwinPowerTurbo?! |

Twin scroll turbo, so 1 turbo with 2 inlets. The idea is you get the benefits of twin turbos in a more efficient design.

Single turbo with a twin scroll design. Basically some marketing shit that BMW dose so people get excited thinking they have a TwinTurbo engine! |

Yet the twin scroll turbo does offer significant performance advantages over the single scroll so I think it is fair that they market this advantage

THANKS for all the replies. So, if a single turbo with double inlets offers great performance in a more efficient and modern design...why does BMW offer most engines with twin turbos? Or are they transitioning to single turbos?

Most recent BMW engines have been twin scroll since the n55. Some M cars still rock twin turbos.

As for twin turbos vs twin scroll - yes, general trend since n55 was to increase efficiency going with twin scroll. Twin turbos are offered now mostly on V8 cars - each 4 cylinder bank has it's own turbo - that's just layout of V8 |

The biggest benefit of a twin scroll turbo when compared to a similar sized single scroll turbo is faster spool up, thus being able to make more power earlier/lower in the engine revs, which means a more efficient engine. BMW going turbo is all about efficiency. When BMW first used turbos, its goal is to try and make more power without increasing engine size. Now BMW is using twin scroll turbos to further refine that efficiency by minimizing turbo lag in 4/6 cylinder engines. In regards to V8s still using 2 single scroll turbos, its cus the engine itself makes a good amount of torque down low in the rev range already, it does not need to rely on the turbos as much to quickly make power, thus it is still sticking to using 2 smaller turbos. Also for packaging reasons, if BMW used 1 big twin scroll turbo in the V8, the turbo would probably create a huge bulge on the hood in certain models.
