Dakota leather crack
Hi guys,
This morning, I just find out that my driver side bottom seat has some cracks. And mine is out of warranty so I have to take care of it. Does anybody have a good suggestion? Thank you. |

You should start probally start cleaning the leather and use some leather conditioner to prevent more cracks to develop, as for the cracks that you have you could use some leather filler to patch them up, they aren't that big so it's best to take care of it asap before it gets bigger and spreads.

Also. Seat bottoms are the same on both sides. You could swap covers so the cracks will be on inside of passenger seat. It's not an easy job though. I have done it before though.

I have a lot of these already. Is this even covered under warranty?

Yes, it is covered by BMW warranty but I am out of it.
Thank you for lots of advices. By the way, what kind of filler and conditioner you guys use? To switch it to passenger side is a very good idea and I will keep in mind if it goes worse. |

unplug and remove seats from vehicle outer edges of covers come off fairly easy. however on the seams there are hog rings that hold cover to the foam. use side cutters to cut old rings. and if you dont have ring pliers to reinstall, use zip ties instead. i think there are some videos on youtube on installing seat covers. |

Had smaller but similar craks after a week. Dealer glued it (brought in a specialist). They told me that if i regularly (every couple of weeks) treat the leather then it would be ok. Exactly opposite from what they told me at the delivery where they said i can wait a few months bcs the car is new.

In the past, used an auto/upholstery shop repair other cars I've owned taht the leather seats eventually cracked in certain sections. They the bad section which usually happens to that first bolster (bottom or seat back) your weight hits on the way in and out.
At least my other leather seats were sewn together in sections, so the shop removes the material from the seat, orders the leather replacement piece and sews it back onto the seat. Can't even tell it was replaced unless one owns older faded leather seats. Cost me around $75 but that was 10 years ago.

Had many reviews on Amazon so it seems to be popular. $9.99 8 oz. or $15 for the 16 oz bottle Amazon's description: Bickmore Bick 4 Leather Conditioner 16oz - Best Since 1882 - Cleaner & Conditioner - Restore Polish & Protect All Smooth Finished Leathers.

if you want to prevent cracking, conditioner is not really the answer. you need to lift your butt off the seat when exiting. and not slide and crush the side bolster when entering and exiting.
