Exhaust tip question

So, my X5 got clipped on the rear passenger corner. Not terrible damage and the other driver's insurance is taking care of everything.

Today I went to one of their "preferred" body shops because the work is all cosmetic. The exhaust tip has a slight dent and the chrome is scuffed up. The estimator said that it isn't an exhaust tip and that an entirely new muffler needs to be ordered. Is that right? $1,400 for a new muffler seems a little egregious when it is just the chrome cover that needs to be fixed.

At the end of the day, I don't care too much as it is the other guy's insurance paying, but that just doesn't seem right.

Looking at RealOem it appears that the is no option for changing of just the tips. The whole unit comes together. The adjuster is correct.

Yup, the muffler and tips are 1 whole piece. Only way to replace the tip separately is to cut it off.

I personally would just paint it black - it will look a lot better than stock chrome and be around $100 max, but insurance companies don't work that way

Why don't you ask if you can upgrade for a bit more or maybe less.

It's a lease and I'm just not interested in changing the exhaust.

Yeah get the M performance exhaust and then at the end of the lease reinstall the old exhaust and sell the M performance on this forum. That is what I would do.

never mind, he has a 50i lol

Wait a sec, the M Performance Exhaust is only $1200? The repair shop quoted $1,480 for just the regular muffler. I'd definitely swap if it were cheaper.

Double wait a sec... Is the 50i already equipped with the MPE?

Technically you can order 1 chrome tailpipe tip part #: 18307633311 (Left) and 18307633312 (Right) https://parts.bmwofsouthatlanta.com/...302287154.html they are identical for 35i or 50i with trapezoid tips

but that's still $450 each and it will require a clamp, so imho since you are not paying for it - not worth it
