"842 Cold climate means insulated crankcase ventilation, which is good to have in cold winter" specifically in places like Norway (this is the big market for this option). I read it being actively discussed in some Norwegian BMW forum and google translated it in order to figure it out for you. Essentially, some of them concluded that it also included the heated seats, mirrors, and wiper nozzles. Some also said it helps heat the car up faster (which seems reasonable in very very cold climates).

I noticed something similar on mine when I looked up the VIN on http://www.bmwarchiv.de/vin/. Except mine is S823A Hot-climate version. This is under standard equipment. And I did get Cold Weather Package, so it lists heated steering, heated seats, etc. under optional equipment. Don't know what it means. Where I live, it is regularly over 100 in the summer, but it gets below 0 in the winter, so I'm not sure which is better.

That’s great! Thank you opasha!

Now I want to know more about this. Apparently, they leave the factory as either a cold climate version, or a hot climate version, I assume, based on what region it is going to. Is it just one or the other, or is there a version that has neither... a just right climate version?
I would like to know more about what is specifically done for each version. The "insulated crankcase ventilation" sounds about right for the cold climate version, but there must be more to it than that. I hope we can hear from someone who has some inside information on what modifications are involved on both the hot and cold climate versions and if there are any that get built that don't have either one or the other. I have never seen this as an option a consumer can choose. Is it dictated by BMW based on the region it is being shipped to? Lots of questions.

I believe that the hot climate version has additional cooling for oil, etc. and is the default for the US market.

Know this is an old post but my G30 5 series has S823 Hot-climate version and S842 Cold-climate version.

I have no idea what that means or why.

The car was bought in California and has cold weather package so perhaps thats why it has both

My car has heated front and reat seats, heated steering wheel, and headlight washers. It is listed as Hot Climate version. It is not listed as Cold Climate.

My '17 35d was sold to Bob Smith BMW in Calabasas, and this is where I bought it new at the end of Sept. Build is listed July 2017/
