BMW discontinues remote start for recent X5's

I just bought a 2017 X5 35d, and began investigating remote start options. To my great dismay, there doesn't seem to be any aftermarket options. I called my local BMW dealer to inquire about the OEM remote start option, which I wasn't thrilled with anyway...only to find out BMW discontinued it two days ago due to "excessive power draw on the batteries".

So, let me make sure I understand this correctly. There are no aftermarket remote start solutions in the past few model years of the X5. BMW just discontinued their OEM remote start system. As far as I know, there are no plans to support remote start from the Connected+ app either, although it is available in earlier model years.

Dear BMW...W.T.F.?

Sure makes it annoying to warm up an engine (per BMW recommendations) in the middle of winter when you can't have a garage at your home.

I've seen a couple people here say techs have gotten aftermarket solutions to work, but they're on the opposite side of the country from my WA state home. Anyone know of *any* working solution available now?

You could pay one of your neighbors and somebody at work to run out and start your car for you for that money

Ive had remote starters before in other brands. With the efficiency of seat heaters especially with the back heated too . . . it takes about 3 min to feel comfortable without wasting fuel.

Aftermarket is absolutely possible but unfortunately like you said, there's likely no one local to you that has or can do them.

I have it installed and my biggest gripe is that it shuts off when entering. Last time I checked DEI viper lists yes on website but doesn't actually have a bypass yet to start the car.

Guys, this isn't yet another argument thread against remote starts. It's routinely 20*F or lower during the winter and 100*F or higher during the summer here, and I can't have a garage with my home. I've used remote start with all of my vehicles for well more than half the year, every year. There can't be an argument against the convenience (and possibly the necessity) of this.

I'm just upset that BMW has left me with no options whatsoever. Awfully lame for $75k vehicle.

Hey!
Just wondering if you have found a solution yet.
I got a 2018 X5 Xdrive 35d and also looking to have a remote starter installed.
Thanks!

It is crazy. What's going in with these companies. I can remote start my wife's Volvo XC60 with an app on my phone from anywhere in the world!! But I cant permanently shut off the start/stop system in the same volvo. Lol. My x5 let's me keep the start/stop disabled but can't remote start it. Wtf

I think bmw realizes how extended idling is not good for the vehicle. That's probably why they don't offer remote start anymore.

Its back on as a factory option on the G05 X5. I've never been a big fan of remote start, was happy BMW avoided it, now I am afraid the wife will ask for it on her next vehicle.

They do offer it but the recent SW glitch has rendered them useless so they stopped. It has nothing to do with idling. And most of them have timers and will shit the car off after a certain period of time. Idling for 5-10 min isn't going to hurt anything.

I love the idea of remote start. Great way to cool or heat up your car in the extreme temps

I remember older bmws used to say in the manual not to do extended idling.

Totes. I just ask what's "extended." Hence the use of the timers that cut the engines off. I had an after market one from MoBridge on my Merc and it signaled the lights once a minute and would cut off after 15.

Did you read the thread? There are aftermarket solutions and an oem one that you can find used perhaps. The aftermarket ones even keep the car on once you get in.

Never said perhaps. In fact I gave two manufacturers that members here have installed and working for years.
