winter tires RFT vs Non-RFT characteristics..

I'm considering going non-rft for winter with Pirelli scorpion 19 inch. Aside from not having room for a spare, any other disadvantages going non-rft? Does the stiffer sidewall on RFT play a big factor especially with the weight of x5?

Run flats usually offer a rougher ride which can be extremely irritating on pothole filled roads.
Pot holes also add nice little bubbles to the stiff side walls of Run flats.

Besides no spare, I'm not sure if there are any disadvantages to regular winter tires

BMW (watched a video, can't remember where) mentioned that BMWs equip. with RFTs had the suspensions tuned for the stiff RFT side wall, switching conventional tires will reduce the riding quality.

I bought non-rft for the winter setup (now for sale btw.) and don't regret it at all. I especially bought the rims and gyres separately as BMW didn't supply non-rft. Th erode is in no way worst, on the contrary, it is more supple and forgiving when the road surface is harsher.

Kind regards,
Niclas

I've rolling on RFT Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow, staggered 20's. Been very happy with their performance, both in snow and wet. The ride quality is similar to the OEM P-Zeros, and I don't find the ride harsh at all.

Just picked up mine and staggered. Love these for snow. Had them on E70 and my jeep as well.

I put a deposit for these too, hopefully they are here by mid November when I planned to swap for winter wheels.

Those black wheels will look amazing on a white car!

Good to hear. Our car is about 2 weeks old and got the P-Zero's as well. Found the ride comfortable which is far different from our old X5's RFT's Bridgestones. I also ordered the 20" RFT Pirelli Scorpions as well so I'll know soon enough. Good to know they'll perform and ride as well as the P-Zero.

Agreed. Loved those rims but it was just so expensive. The X5 will look great with those.

Dubsesd, those Toyo's look super agressive. Always heard good things about their Graspic winters.

Unless you live on a mountain, you don't need more than what Contis DWS offers (I've driving on solid ice and 8" snow on my E70 X5s with them). RFT sucks, noisy, heavy, and rides rough. non-RFT will always be my preference.
