BMW X5 35i , 35d , or 50i...
This thread may not be a new one.
But I would like to call for everyone's perspective, selection and reasons behind it. Which one would you choose and "WHY?" (current owners, past owners , and future owners) 1- 35i 2- 35d 3- 50i I've intentionally selected these 3 line ups as we do not have 40 or 50d's in North America. I'm personally a 50d fan, but it doesn't exist here Also if I had to choose between 35i or 50i I probably would have gone for 50i...but the fuel consumption is a major setback for me...I don't really get the 35i though honestly...but would love to hear your thoughts and choice. I personally chose the 35i with oem mppk tune and oem mpe exhaust simply because it's the more reliable motor from what I have researched and sounds fantastic. Pickup and overall performance is more than adequate for a family suv as well. My prior x5 was a 35d and I loved the low end torque, but wanted a sportier drive thus time personally.

35i
99% city driving and the 35i gets better mileage Couldn't justify 11k for the difference in engine For 3k worth of tunes I can get close enough to a stock 50i Reliability |

Because of the great torque on Diesel (close to 50i's) , I think the take off aspect goes to diesel compared to 35i...it is after the take off that 35i comes into play given the greater HP. Is this a correct view point?

The torque of the 50i just plants you back in the seat. Fuel consumption is what it is. Looked at the 35i, but in the end the torque got to me. I had a 2011 50i, so I just stayed with it. I just wish there was another option with the sport package other than the staggered RFT's.

35i
-the V8 from 50i might not be as reliable -can't take advantage of costco gas station if I have the diesel :P -with the price diff between 35i and 50i, I can get MPPK, MPE, Dinan, body kit etc -fuel consumption is better on 35i |

Basically the 35i (Lux package) I have was the only CPO I could find within 500 miles that had what I wanted in it. I lost a lot of money on my two year old Lexus I traded in because I bought it new and it depreciated more than I thought, so I decided I wasn't going to buy a brand new car right away again, especially since this is my first BMW and I wanted to make sure I liked the brand enough before I plunk down $70K for a new M sport. But....even if they had a CPO diesel I would have had a hard time paying extra for a fairly minor increase in mpg. A Porsche cayenne diesel would have been a different story...the difference in mpg between gas vs diesel is almost twice that of the X5- 7mpg benefit in the Porsche, only 4mpg for the x5. I will not own the car long enough for the increase price to be made up for by gas savings (at today's gas prices it would take 10+ years)
Test drove the 50i (though not by choice- asked the guy for a CPO 35i and he brought out a fully loaded 50i....the moron). Loved the performance, but my x5 will be my highway cruiser. My commute will soon go to 35 miles each way, and the difference in mpg was too great to justify the extra cost. THe 35i has plenty of HP for me, though the more I read about the MPPK the more I am interested. Curious that the dealership didn't mention that was an option |

IMO some dealers are not really knowledgeable about the product they are selling. I've asked around a few dealers in my area and they are clueless about MPPK, MPE, Front splitter and rear diffusers. I guess they are not really interested in learning about these add on accessories and parts and instead only about selling as many cars as possible.

Although the HP comes shorter on diesel, but the difference in fuel consumption wins it for me...man the 50i just devours fuel and is almost double the diesel !!! BTW, we should be comparing the Premium gasoline price vs Diesel and not the regular...in some States or Provinces, Diesel is slightly higher, but in the majority of them Premium is much higher. We also have factor in the number of visits to the gas station...with diesel the number of visits are significantly lower (a Tank runs for about 800-900km (500-550 miles) whereas 50i only gives you about 500-550km (310-340 miles)...give or take. Because cost of vehicle (it was on the lot and marked down), economy, I wanted a diesel, torque for every-day driving, the diesel cruises effortlessly at highway speeds. The premium for the 5.0 didn't make sense for me as this is an SUV - I already own a sports car with as much power and its faster.

50i
I treasure power/torque over everything else. And the V8 sound I've never cared about fuel economy, and reliability...that's what warranties and the dealership are for FWIW my 50i has been super reliable. |

I'm sure if the HP/ TQ numbers were reversed (413HP/255 TQ) for a 35d, you'd see a lot more of them on road and owners on this forum. LOL
Sadly, the truth is that the HP number is what most people will worry about most........I'm sure most people looking for a X5 don't look at dyno curves. (I won't pretend I'm an expert on power curves either) |

V8, especially for such a heavy SUV.

35i mppk is faster for sure. 35d was pretty quick as well, and picked up on highway passes effortlessly without even downshifting. Both great but diesel was just less sporty

One can dream. BTW very glad the 35D is not affected by the recent diesel fiasco. I think BMW diesels are about to sell a lot more. |

If you're going for the sporty exhaust note, definitely the 35i or 50i. The 35D will always sound like a Ford F350 superduty truck, which that whistle noise when you accelerate. I kind of like it, but it's not everyone's cup of tea.
