On the scale of 1-10 what would you rate your level of your steering wheel vibration on a stop or waiting for a traffic light? Especially on the 50i v8 engine?

If 1 is nothing and 10 is the worst, it's a definite 1. 50i here too...perfectly smooth at a stoplight.

P.S. Sometimes it could be a misfire (plugs) or bad fuel, if you had a scanning OBDII tool - you can diagnose and see if any misfires or anything else unusual took place |

Could be a loose motor mount.

If the check engine light is not on or the car says ALL SYSTEMS OK, I'd still give your SA a call for a diagnosis request. It might be just a matter of time when things get progressively worse and might finally trigger the engine light or some other warning.
Car should NOT be shaky at idle unless it's a hot rod!

Usually vibration is due to worn engine and transmission mounts - no check engine light in this case obviously, but I doubt it's the case in 2015 x5. Or it's a plugs/coils issue - which can not cause check engine light either in majority of cases. However, OBDII scanner will show misfire or similar abnormalities. I would invest in some platform capable of diagnosing, clearing codes and coding - it's a extra piece of mind. Carly is one of them, but there are many others
Some questions for you: 1. Does it vibrate no matter if AC is on or off? 2. Does vibration go away if you put it in Neutral? 3. In Neutral - try increasing rpm's a bit and see if vibration goes away? 4. Does it vibrate no matter if car is cold or warmed up completely? 5. Does vibration coincide with radiator fan turning on trying to cool down engine? 6. Try putting it in Park while at stop light and see if vibration goes away? "New" to me X5
Quote:
I recently purchased a 2014 X5 50i and I think I'm experiencing the same thing (2/10 steering wheel vibration) at stop lights. I brought it into the dealership and they had the head tech come down and attempt to reproduce. He put it back and forth between P/N/R/D a few times while I watched and he felt the slight vibration when in gear, but said that's normal. He said that he'll run it for codes, but I don't think that would help if it's bad mounts or TC. They ended up taking it in for a bad liftgate motor anyways, so it's still at the dealership while I wait for that part to come in. I got a 330i as loaner, and I would definitely describe the steering wheel vibration of that at a stoplight as a 1 or a 0 (with start/stop disabled). Granted, that's not apples to oranges, as the 330i is about half the displacement, so there's less noise/vibration in most situations anyways. I tend to be more sensitive to vibrations and noises, so I'm starting to think maybe I'm just being a hypochondriac in this situation. I didn't notice this during the test drive or the first couple of weeks after all. I wouldn't describe the 2/10 vibration as much more than the hum of the engine at idle, it doesn't chatter your teeth or anything. I really only started noticing this vibration after I reconditioned the leather (chemical guys) on the steering wheel and was more focused on the steering wheel feel. Maybe Stev_chu just learned it was "normal" and lived with it, and I should do the same? Last edited by x5roadtrip; 11-02-2020 at 04:25 PM.. |
