Hey everyone new (Used) 2015 x5 50i reporting in

Hello everyone just purchased a 2015 x5 50i with 24900 miles. white on black m sport, Executive, LED, Drive assist. I am loving it and everything about it, its a tad too aggressive IMO ONE small question i am seeking some answers for.

I came from a e92 v8 M3 and gas mileage was never on my mind. However coming on to this 50i i noticed the MPG i am averaging for 2 days use, on the consumption history. it showed 15.3 which is fine, However on my odometer it shows that i have put on 80 miles. but i am already at 60% of a tank left. the math isnt adding up. becasue at this rate my tank would be DONE up in under 200 miles.

Ignoring the statement above, my question would be, Is there anyway to find out if the previous owner has tuned this car in any shape or form because the vehicle does seem to drive VERY agressively and gas mileage seems to be way off compared to what the computer is showing and whats actual MPG I'm using.

Thanks for stopping by i look forward in taking part in this F15 community.

here are some pictures:

15mpg is not bad if it's in NYC, try to reset trip computer on highway just to check
If there's no piggyback under the hood visible - then the only other option is a flash previous owner may have done (DME needs to be unlocked - taken out and then flashed). You can always go to BMW dealer to check and update/correct any software back to stock as it's still on factory 4/50 warranty (or you can probably use some tools to check it via OBDII)

I understand your question exactly, but I do not have a good answer for you.

I guess if you were really paranoid you could go back to the dealership (assuming it was a BMW dealer) and ask them to print out a history report which would show the last few days/weeks of max speed, RPM, MPG, gearbox shift points, ...

I know they have the ability to generate such reports, just am not sure they are allowed to hand them to you.

It is also a possibility that not the last owner, but dealership employees were hooning the x50i on weekends while it was in their inventory. It is such a fun car and moves like a hunted gazelle!

My x50i gets 20 mpg if I'm behaving. With a 22 gal tank, that puts my range well above 400 miles. In your case 300 mile tank range.

Congrats! She's a beaut!!!!!

Hello and congratulations!

Neither a piggyback tune nor a flash tune would cause the kind of discrepancy in fuel consumption your talking about.

Piggyback tuners will be visible somewhere in the engine compartment. Mine is very neatly installed, but there is simply no way to 100% hide the control module. There are two common types of piggyback tuners: RaceChip and Burger. RC intercepts the MAP sensor on each intercooler (located under the air cleaner assembly) and the wiring runs to a central control box that must be mounted somewhere near the front of the engine bay. Burger has two small modules that intercept the MAF sensor on the top of the engine. Find these sensors and look for aftermarket wiring.

As far as a flash tune, I highly doubt the previous owner spent all the time and money doing it but didn't bother to swap out the grey/chrome grills for some black ones or make any other cosmetic changes.

As you probably know, the only accurate way to measure fuel economy is to top off the tank, reset the odometer then do your fuel calculations at the subsequent fill up. I would do that, drive it at least couple hundred miles, then compare your actual MPG to what the vehicle calculates.

Do a 0-60 vid and we'll tell you if it's tuned or not lol

(jk, i think you can try what Rotzy suggested for mpg and on your next service/oil change ask dealer to check your software/DME - just state as it is that you are concerned that previous owner tuned a vehicle

Welcome!

15mpg is really not bad at all. I get 14mpg (270-280 miles per tank) driving mostly in Brooklyn and occasionally being stuck on the BQE and mines a 35i!

Thank you all for all the quic and informative responses.

As some of you like rotzy have mentioned, thats how i have been gauging my fuel consumption on my VERY first fill up, i topped it off off, odometer resetted, and its been 2 days 80 miles in, i have 60% left. therefore i should be hitting ...200miles per tank if these figures keep constant.

Im not a paranoid bug in nature so i doubt its just in my head. Also i came from an e92 m3 and i am use to gas mileage being somewhat poor. but lol the 50i seems to make my e92 m3 feel like a prius in comparison (on the iDrive it states 15 mpg but according to odometer and tank capacity left i highly doubt its 15mpg)

P.S. Maybe the previous owner swappped the grilles back out when he sold it haha but i am definitely looking to replace them with some black ones if anyone has a pair for sale Let me know

Ditto - If I do half a tank of highway driving, it'll push the average up into the 18mpg range, but otherwise, I'm generally at about 15mpg with the 50i.

I barely got 400 miles on a full tank over the thanksgiving week, with 95% highway driving.

Short answer: granny mod.
Long answer:

-Copious use of the cruise control
-Cruise is almost always set to either 65mph or 55mph
-90% or so highway miles
-Comfort mode

Interesting enough, I got fewer miles per tank using eco pro. Go figure. I thought the coasting feature would save me but nope.

Realistically, I never get above 425 miles per tank. I think if I were really dedicated, I could bat 450 miles ... maybe.

The gas consumption (I have found), is highly dependent on your driving habits. If the powertrain "learns" that you are driving 80% throttle most of the time, it will burn rich most of the time.

If you are thrifty like me, it will probably consume far less as it learns and adapts to your driving style.

It's like playing a game you are constantly tweaking.

Having said that, 400 miles (20mpg) is still awesome for this beast!!!

My 50i already spends half a gallon when i open the door and another half to turn the radio on, but it's still manageable with easy foot driving

That's good to know I'm not the only one getting terrible mpg, seems like everyone else's city driving is like highway driving in NYC. This does make me wonder if I should've went for the 50i instead lol
