does an F15 have it's own wifi network?

If so, is it any good? how much does data cost? would I be better off using the data plan on my ipad? What company does the data come from in the USA? Any other details that anyone would like to offer?

If I understood USA has a fixed download rate, no extra cost?
Europe uses the data connection of your mobile phone.

It comes with 3G SIM card and you can't use it as HotSpot in your car. I don't think there is a way to access it.

I found this, but more info would be helpful:

Anyone with an F15 x5 care to elaborate on this feature:

"Internet access is available as an option on 2014 models equipped with navigation and the latest BMW iDrive 4.22 as part on BMW Online. The internet browser is connected through the vehicle using a 3G network connection."

I am curious if the SIM card is end user accessible (which would be nice) - or how exactly this works. Does it work with tethered phones, for example.

I thought I read somewhere that Euro spec x5's have an option for an end user SIM card as well as the option to create an "in car" wireless hot spot.

There a considerable amount of information on the new "connected" features for the '14 model year here:

http://www.bmwusanews.com/newsreleas...?&id=1713&mid=

However, which components are USA specific are a bit unclear.

The new iPhone wireless profiles support is interesting as well.

Update - just found more information here - seems as though a dedicated 4G SIM pluggable solution may be available:

Good info on this site. There is so much about the X5 that BMW doesnt clarify and there is no info to be found anywhere on BMW sites. Dealerships also seem to know very little...

So, the car gets data from it's sim card that we pay for, but if we want our own data connection, we have to set up some other account to get that? Audi offers a sim card system where the T-mobile sim card provides data for the car to use, like the navigation maps, but also can provide data for anyone in the car via the car's own wifi network.

BMW doesn't offer anything like that? if not, it is a shame.

I don't know about Audi but the purpose of the built in SIM card is to get data for BMW online Apps like weather.

3G is more than enough for such apps and its never intended for in car hotspot. BMW probably doesn't want the overhead of WiFi issues. It's complicated and unnecessary.

Most smartphones does come up with built in hotSpot that you can enable to distribute your network.
