Apple CarPlay

I am not sure if this topic has been covered but I was unable to find the answer when I searched thru this forum... i found one website where they talk about retrofit 15 x5M/F85, saying it's unavailable... anyone know if it can be coded or can get the Apple CarPlay on my car? I don't think I have Apple play equipped on my car or it wasn't even available until 2016+ models.... can I get download or any ideas?

Anyone using it ? I have it on my M5 but have not activated it. Currently configured like my X5M which is fine.

I had Apple CarPlay on my G30 too and used it a little bit.
OP, not sure if you can use Google Map, I think it is defaulted at Apple Maps, which is not that good IMO.
As far as music, which app are you using?
If it just stored music in your phone, you don't even need Apple CarPlay.

It cannot be coded on any vehicle as it is a hardware upgrade in the 2017 MY that enables it (NBT6 I think). BMW actually had to do an internals upgrade to have the processing power to support it.

With that said, I have it and don't use it. Apple Maps is mediocre and any music I have can be played via Spotify as a Connected App or via USB. Plus, the CarPlay interface looks childish compared to iDrive. Resolution is all messed up and it looks like an iPhone 4. iDrive is clean and looks great.

You can use Google Maps on your phone and send destinations straight from your phone to the iDrive now. No more sending it as a message to your car. iDrive does the routing still (not always a good thing).

I guess I'm the weird one here that actually likes using car play. My main uses are music, maps, and occasionally the audible app.

I subscribe to iTunes music and listen to their radio stations daily. I also store my favorite songs in playlists and listen to those as well. Navigating through music on your iPhone using Car Play is 10x better than iDrive. Additionally iDrive doesn't let you access iTunes radio using their interface.

Maps definitely has its flaws in regards to finding the best routes however, I feel like all the apps have their quirks. At least with car play you can conveniently see history from your iPhone and if you want to upload the address to iDrive, you can wwith the touch of a button.

Right now my iPhone X connects my phone numbers etc without using the CarPlay. If I activate CarPlay, what are the advantages.

It's for Google Maps specifically into iDrive. If you want Apple Maps, then use CarPlay.

I agree with all of this, 100%. I love CarPlay, but I do think we’re in the minority! It’s quirky, but once you learn to navigate it, it’s great (not unlike iDrive).

I tried it out when I got my 17 X5M. I wasn't impressed. I like the regular BMW software. Also, navigation with the regular software is best with the BMW software since you can make use of the HUD for directions.

Additionally, with the BMW software I don't need to touch the screen. I find touchscreen just stay really dirty.

Just wondering if anybody has a workaround with this.
I like to be able to just press the button and ask to call a name/number through the idrive but now that I have carplay-It won't allow me to when it is active.
Seemed like a waste of money to include the car play and smartphone integration on my X5 D.

I don't think CarPlay will be good until iOS 12 comes out this fall. This is when you can use third party navigation apps like Waze. Much better than Maps.

Biggest reason I use CarPlay is for voice dictation of text messages using Apple Messages. I've been unable to find a way to send voice dictated text messages using iDrive

I routinely use the non-CarPlay BMW default to send messages and hear my messages via my iPhone X. All I do is hold the talk button for a few seconds and Siri will prompt instead of the BMW voice.

I use Carplay when I'm using google or waze maps, and begrudgingly listen to music stored on my phone. However, the sound quality of music coming from the phone is not as good as Sirius XM in my opinion. Does anyone agree and know why this is the case?
