X5M brakes on X5 M50d

Hello,

I asked about this some time ago and have now been working on it further.

So my car (collecting it Weds) has the upgraded M Performance brakes fitted as of today.

I took the chance to go try the X5M rotors on the vehicle and it would appear...

Front will fit fine
Rear won't fit without a hole being drilled for the locating screw. The hole on the X5 rotor is in between the 2 bolt holes. On the X5M rotor there are 2 holes for this, but both are offset towards the bolt holes slightly.

So my plan is to machine the hole. Anyone else been down this route?

Thanks

Perfect timing.

So you confirmed that the X5M front rotors fits the M Performance brake kit correct?

I am doing the same install tomorrow for my X5 except I am keeping the MPBK rear rotors and only using the X5M front rotors.

Not be offering the fit to the car but they appear to be identical side by side. I would be interested to hear how you get on. Unfortunately when I got there the front was done so could not try.

Please let me know how you get on.

Thanks

I will bring both sets of rotors to my installer tomorrow so just incase the F85 front rotors don't work I will have a back up plan. Everything i've read suggest that they fit since they are the same size as the previous Gen X5M

The M performance rotors are the same size as the F85 X5 in all written dimensions / data.

Guys, in my experience, you can skip the screw since the brake rotor will be sandwiched between the wheel and the hub anyway. Some European car don't use a screw to secure the rotor to the hub itself. I forgot which European brand, if I remember correctly, it is Benz and Porsche.
I would put an extra 3-5lbs of torque on the lug bolt.

My installer just texted me saying that the front F85 M rotors bolts right up no issues. Can't wait to pick up the X5 after work!

This is partially correct. Since we use lug bolts (not nuts), we need some way to keep the rotor centered on the hub so that the lug bolts screw right in. I would try with only one screw (or pin as shown above) to keep the rotor in place - rotate the hub to where the single screw is at 12 o'clock position, hold the wheel in place and start as many lug bolts as possible. No need to machine anything.

And do not over tighten the lug bolts - you can start to warp rotors as EURO rotor metal is a different alloy than most - that's why you have to replace much sooner than US machines. The rotor and pads work together to stop the car rather than US rotors are there to take punishment from pads only. But its cheaper to replace pads than pads AND rotors. Anyway, torque to spec ONLY.

Cheapest place I've seen online is from a BMW dealer on ebay $2499 with free shipping for the full M Performance brake kit.

The rotors bolts right up the M Performance brake kit no problems. The only thing you will also need is the F85 specific hex screw that holds the rotor to the hub of the car. The screw thats on the F15 is too big to go into the F85 rotor and sit flush. Both are M8 size but the stock one is M8x14 and the F85 is M8x12

Part number is 34111123072 (you need two of these)

Thanks to Alan giving me the right input and all needed details!

Finally the installation of the X5 M F85 brake discs on the M Performance brake of my X5 50i (AC Schnitzer ACS5) was successful.

The front rotors fit without any modification (only shorter fixation screw) and for the back rotors I milled a new hole with a step for the screw head on the right position. I used the M performance brake rotor as reference.

The holes on the F85 rear rotor are not on the right place for the X15 brake holder.

Here the final pictures in combination with my winter tires.

Looking good. Don't forget that coding is REQUIRED if you want the full benefits of the MPBK. I am still amazed just how much better the brakes feel with this upgrade.

You are right.

I did it already!

In Germany you will got only the approval for the kit in your documents with a declaration of the dealer that he has done the coding for the MPBK.

Just wonder what needs to be coded after installing the brake kit? I think my shop just installed it without coding 😨

BMW specifies in the MPBK install that coding is required. I posted about this in the coding thead of what needs to be done. The brake pedal feel difference was dramatic before and after coding for the MPBK. Others on the 2/3 series forums reported the same feel change before and after coding for it.
