Steering Wheel Does Not Tilt

Went to get in my x5 today and the steering wheel is stuck in the upright position. The position when you park the vehicle. When I used the control lever it will go back & forth but not up & down. You can hear an audible click when you try to make go up or down but nothing happens. Any ideas before I drop her off at the dealership? Thx guys!

I had a similar problem. Mine stopped telescoping but tilted just fine. Dealership said they had to order the part but somehow reset something so that it worked until the part came in. Pretty easy fix though, took about an hour and covered under warranty. Hard to drive the car though

Had the same problem twice in the last several months... First time the dealer change the switch motor and the second time they were not able to replicate it and nothing was done.

Mine has done this a couple of times. I haven't had the dealer check it yet, the issue has corrected itself each time.

Same thing here. I banged on it pretty hard as I started the car, when it was supposed to be moving, and it is working again. It works now, but makes light buzzing noise as it moves. Haven't been to dealer.

My steering wheel just begin to make a clicking noise when it lifts itself into the parked position. Was this happening before the steering wheel stopped telescoping?

This happened to me a couple of weeks ago. Hadn't owned the car but for two months and 4000 mi and the steering wheel was stuck in the up position. Would go back and forth but not up and down. Would only hear a click when using the tilt lever. Had to drive around for a week like this as I waited for my appointment at the dealer. Dealer ended up ordering and installing a new steering column. This took several days to get and install the part. Cost would have been around $2800 had this not been under warranty.

Haven't this specific issue, but I did have a problem (twice now) where the column squeaks and creaks when raising / lowering to position. Dealer has corrected both times.

This sounds more like what I'm experiencing.

I'm at 8800 miles and over 1.3 years of ownership. Doing exactly what yours did... awkward to drive like a bus.

I had the same issue over the weekend (F16/X6). It was very annoying and dangerous driving around with the steering wheel in the up position. I pulled a few fuses from the back and that corrected it. I'm going to take it to BMW this week. I'm also have an issue whenever I turn on the automatic high beam. I get a message on my screen "Camera-based systems malfunction." Two glitches on a car with only 6K miles. Scary.

Picked up X5 this afternoon after nearly a week in the 428i xdrive. They ended up manually "unjamming" the steering wheel and then reprogramming the steering column motor so that presumably this doesn't happen again.

Side note: They did put 5 miles on the odometer which I don't like but what can you do. Anyways, I've missed this beast.

Cheers for the inputs guys!

Just an update. The steering wheel as AGAIN stopped tilting up and down. Luckily though it's not stuck in the upright position (like a school bus) so I'm not terribly mad. I will wait to take it in AGAIN to the dealer to be "fixed" when either something else breaks or I need scheduled maintenance. Still love the truck a ton despite this.

Mine (2015) made noise going up and down. Dealer ended up replacing the entire steering column. Works fine now.

My had started to make a squeaking sound every time i turn on/off the car(when the steering wheel goes back to its original position). Besides that annoying sound everything works fine. Hopefully it doesn't go worse than that.

My 2016 with 4,000 miles quit going up or down. Took in, said needed
a new column. On way home it started working. Part came in told them
its off and on working. Hope they replace it with the new part. Sure is
a pain with an hour in and getting a loaner

Seems like the tilt/telescope feature has had issues on these vehicles. Mine is making a squeaking/grinding noise when you shut the vehicle off. This is the second time it has done it in the last year and a half.
