Experienced the same exact thing recently with the grinding noise. Took it in for service and mentioned it. Long story short, an “EXPENSIVE” part needed to be replaced in the column (as it was simpler to replace than to repair) and now all is well. Luckily it only cost me the $50 deductible (extended warranty).

Can this be coded out so the steering wheel just stays in place when you shut the car off? I worry all the in-out day after day will cause it to fail and will get expensive if it breaks again now that it’s not under warranty.

Yes you can (fortunately).
Check this thread, last few posts talk about disabling it.

What do you mean? The link is not working? I opened it without problems. Just in case it does not work for some users, this is what needs to be coded to disable the steering wheel easy access function :
For F15 set the following to "Aktiv":
BDC Body -- V_MAX_AKTIVER_EINSTIEG_AKTIV
BDC Body -- V_MAX_DEAKTIVIER_EINSTIEG_AKTIV

Then check that the following have: wert_01 = 00 00
BDC Body -- V_MAX_AKTIVIERUNG_EINSTIEG
BDC Body -- V_MAX_DEAKTIVIER_EINSTIEG
