Omg!!!! That's a hell scary!! I'm afraid now about my kids !

I believe BMW should do an immediate recall for their cars equipped with "auto soft closing" and ensure sensors and hydraulic systems are all replaced/working to their optimum safety

Thanks for sharing the article.

...and I was thinking of their benefits just this AM when the door did not settle properly and came right back at me!
Scary story...

It is the system that pulls back the doors to shut (like the auto closing system of the tailgate)

Yikes! good to know.

I have the soft close door but my issue is excessive wind noise (during highway driving) from my driver door. I've checked all of the seals on my door, can't find where the extra wind noise is coming from.

On the F15 and F16?

It is just an extra electric motor in the door locking mechanism, no hydraulics...

It Got Me A Couple Of Times

My door has pinched me twice. Once from inside and once from outside. I didn't even think i had it as a option because when you shut the door it still just slams for the most part. I thought that soft close meant I closed it and it shut softer. I actually means if you don't close the door all the way (closed but not flush), it shuts itself the rest of the way.

Do they really close when it's "a foot ajar"? I thought it was only fractions of an inch from being closed. Car isn't here now or I would test. My crap detector is going off....

It's BS. Even the 2 stage soft close is activated only when the gap between the door and the pillar is too small for an adult finger to fit into.

And, at the end of the day, why would your finger be there? The door has handles...

I believe the metal loop needs to be touching or very close to jaw of the locking mechanism for it to pull it in. I played with it a bit when I was test driving a 50i with it. It did not bring the door in from a foot out.

Yes, if you close the door very lightly but not far enough to engage the latches, electric motors take over to close it the rest of the way. I'm pretty sure the door has to be within millimeters or closing, not inches away. I rarely use it as most people are so ingrained to close the door at normal closing pressure. Only time I use it on purpose is say if its late and I need to get something out of the car and and I don't want a loud door closing sound. I ease it almost closed and let the motors take over.

Yeah, that's why I think that article is a sham. Guy probably was on an incline or something or he shut the door hard himself and cut off his thumb. Trying to get $$$$ from BMW. Some people can hurt themselves with a car of soap.

“With the front driver’s door approximately one-foot ajar, the SCAD [Soft Closing Automatic Doors] sensor activated the electric motor, which pulled the driver’s door firmly, and not ‘so softly’ snapped through the flesh, nerves, blood vessels, tendons, musculature and bone structure of Boateng’s right thumb,” his suit says.
Complete BS. There is no physical way for it close itself from being a foot open. Something out of the ordinary happened, most likely not BMW's fault, and we have another contestant who has entered himself in the American Lawsuit Lottery System, then a nice clickbait headline from the king of clickbait, the NY Post

It's not like soft close cabinet doors that slow down the shut rate if you swing the door hard, it takes over the closing if you have not pushed hard enough to engage the latches.

thats what i was thinking... i have never owned a car with soft closed doors.. but i have witnessed them in action. Doesn't seem like enough force to chop off a finger. I remember way back when, my dad had a cadillac fleetwood with a soft close trunk. He trapped my moms fingers in it once and she can still count to ten.

I rarely use the soft close function, heck the doors on the f15 closes all the way so well with just a little nudge, that I have to purposely not close the door all the way just to get the soft close to work. TBH these doors really don't need soft close, but it is a nice feature to have..rarely.

BS story. Why would be his thumb be in there? I had soft close doors on my 2014 X5 and that thing unlatch most of the time especially once you are on a freeway. Happened a lot. Did not order it on my 2017.
