Key problem?

First key went out a few months ago. Doesn't unlock/lock car, doesn't sound alarm, doesn't start car. Dealer says it's not the battery, the key is just done. Now using the 2nd key the same thing happens. The only difference is that this key can start the car ONLY if it is held at the steering column over the small picture of the key. Has anyone else had this problem? Dealer quoted me $437 per key. X5 is a '15 with 70k

$437 really isn't bad. Even an indy guy will charge $350 and it might not be an actual oem key, but from an aftermarket company.

Try replacing the battery in the key first. Just because the dealer says it’s not the battery doesn’t mean it’s true. They just want to sell you a whole new key.

Having to hold the key next to the key icon on the steering column is a symptom of low battery.

Sounds like battery issue.
I never seen key that stop working after 3 years.
But I do know that Lithium Battery CR2023 last about 2-3 years.

And for batteries I'd also suggest not to use cheap knockoffs sold on eBay/Amazon.

Glad to hear it. Surprised this car doesn’t have a low battery warning for the key. It still surprises me that my jeep had more features than my X5.

This bring back the topic how dealership try to rip your heart out instead of helping you.
I remember that my dealership replaced my remote battery when I was in for service.
But, it was still under warranty and service coverage.

Yep, every 3 years, whether it’s the one you use every day or it’s the one that hasn’t seen the light of day since you got it, replace the battery with fresh new batteries!
