Yup...X5 35d needed Oil Service @5600mi / 6 months
I took my 2017 X5 xDrive 35d into the BMW dealership today, thinking my Service indicator just needed to be re-set. My car was sold and put into service on 9/22/17. I have had it 6 months since new and the odo is 5600!
Sure enough, it needed an oil service/filter and the DEF was very low. Of course all free. So...it seems new/modern BMWs will not always be 1 Service a year or 10,000mi. The shop foreman said my X5 REALLY needed fresh oil and a new filter! I'm glad I went and did just not let it go another 4800 miles like the Service indicator said (even though it also said Service needed 4/1/18). Happy Monday |

These cars definitely need tender and attentive care. I guess if service is indicator on, it means GO get it serviced! (regardless of mileage or date of service indicated)

Do USA cars have different oil to the UK or is the oil service intervals shorter for other reasons? |

Hmm, don't know! All I do know, is that my BMW dealer said my car for sure needed servicing. The oil and filter were very read at 5600 miles. That does seem very early for servicing I agree, but I am happy and glad BMW did it and paid for it. Earlier oil changes are, of course, better for the engine! My Service Advisor told me that if the car is still under factory maintenance, they will do an oil service for free every year, regardless of mileage!
