Night Vision Assist...

For those who have these features. How useful is it and is it functional all year around? Does this feature disable itself above 77F like Audi?

I have Night Vision in my car and when I turn it on to actively watch on the screen its more of a novelty. It is cool how it highlights people and animals in yellow and would probably help driving in the city to identify pedestrians on the side of the road.

The only situation Ive had with animals in the road and my car was night, very dark and my HUD and display started flashing a yellow deer so I slowed down and a deer walked in front. Probably would have hit it if the card didn't warn me. Not sure if this is NV specific.

Mine doesn't do the LED headlights flashing at deer in the above video...Im guessing that can be coded though.

The only issue Ive noticed is when it is raining heavily (Seattle) and the ground and trees are the same temp since they are covered in water...nothing shows up on the screen. Its all one color. Not sure if it would still pick up people and animals in this case.

Haven't noticed it turning off at a certain high temp.

Plus you will need to update your fogs to these:

I find my night vision assist very useful driving down country roads and even through a city in the evening and the range is very impressive.

Those led spotlights are pretty slick, I have a couple questions related to them.
  1. What do they look like installed in the daytime?
  2. Can they be turned on/off via the idrive/connected drive or via the fog light toggle switch?

There is no more switch for the front fog lights, because those spot lights replace them.
You cannot control them via iDrive (why would you want that?).
At night are also used as cornering lights.

Many tend to believe Night Vision only works when the image is broadcasted on the screen.
Actually it does work all the time the headlights are on, and warn you of any pedestrians or animals on the road or crossing.

Does it warn you in the HUD or on the Cluster?

In my opinion, the NV display must only be seen as a mere way to occasionally check that it works - it is NOT your warning interface and it is distracting.

At night the NV system works all the time in the background and warns you acoustically and visually on the instrument panel (or on the HUD if you have one) - and (at least in Europe) also with an intense thin pencil beam directed towards the collision danger.

I guess it is different than MB and Audi.

My x5 has a fog light button near the autolights dial. Id want to have an on/off for a couple reasons.
  1. There are some places where I expect people to cross the road regularly without looking and I don't want my car to blind them, its a nice way to catch a beer bottle at the windshield or worse.
  2. Also, local laws/regulations vary from state to state in the U.S.

Technically doesn't my fog-light button serve as the on/off for whatever is plugged into the harness?

Mate, on factory fitted dynamic spot lights, the front fog lights switch is not installed anymore, I know the location, but I have there only the switch for the rear fog lights.

Correct. There is no more fog light or button. This projector replaces the ROW LED fog/cornering lamp.

For those who have NVA or the ROW variant of NVA would yout get this option again or is this just a novelty item that isn't quite there yet in terms of practicality?

I know that if I didn't have it in the first place, I'd eventually ventured into retrofitting it - just because I always wish for something I didn't get, and once used reasonably priced units become available, it's tough to resist the urge, especially the options you can touch and/or look at.

Hahaha... I have the same problem and from my experience I have found that it is always been cheaper to get it from the beginning than adding it on but sometimes found that after having it I really didn't use it. Curious where this feature would land.

I’m assuming this is ‘after’ you have turned on night vision via the dash mounted switch but then switched the iDrive display to display something other then night vision video. Without turning it on it is not working all the time.

It is working all the time the headlights are on, that button only activates the image on the display. Nobody reads the owner’s manual these days?

84F today and I checked it out during the day. It did not highlight the only person who crossed in front of me (It does when it's dark, could be a one off.). I'll try to remember this weekend and record the differences between night and day with alot of people.
