In daytime the video camera mounted behind the windscreen, next to the rear view mirror is "in charge" of pedestrian crossing detection.

I'm glad I added this option when I spec'd my F15.
I never expected that spotting all of the pre-dawn joggers wearing dark clothing in my neighborhood would by itself justify my choice.
When you use the NV during the day it will shut off if the sun is low enough to shine directly in.
It's also very useful for doing energy audits on poorly insulated buildings. 😜

And if you drive during daytime in a hazy valley it will show you all the mountains the haze is hiding...

Yes, and I would rank Night Vision higher than, say, Rear Entertainment, 4-Zone A/C or Panorama Glass Roof

It's below HUD and other 'assistant' options, but above leather dash, ceramic controls and all those cosmetic 'M' options.

Oh man Idk. My leather dash is pretty high up there over something I've never had and ever see. I gotta stair at that dash every second I'm in the car. Haha. Just my opinion of course. Idk I think it's one of those things that if you have it you like it and if you didn't then you could care less. It's a very expensive option for sure

I am now thinking about retrofitting this, probably should not bother as:

i) dealer might say no and I would not go to anyone else
ii) price might be ridiculous, but I have done worse on this car

I'm assuming this is 'after' you have turned on night vision via the dash mounted switch but then switched the iDrive display to display something other then night vision video. Without turning it on it is not working all the time.
Working great at night, during the day my lights were off. I'll need to take another picture during the day with lights on.

In day time it only works if you manually activate it using the dedicated button. At night it works all the time.

(I'll get to the manual one of these days!) So lights on and manually activate via button for daytime, I'll try that the next opprotunity I have. Thanks

Right, but why would you need NV in daytime?

Pedestrian detection system in daytime is not using NV, in fact PDS is available on vehicles that do not have NV.

I thought the PD w/ NVA has an alert in the cluster and or HUD where as the PD on other vehicles was just a rapid beeping before engaging brakes.

You might want to check it in the owner’s manual, which clearly states the warning is both visual and audible in daytime for vehicles without NV.

My X5M does not have Adaptive Cruise Control like my 50i did... I didn't think it worked the same way but either way thank you for the assistance and explanation.
