Lurch after park

Could have sworn I saw a post a few weeks ago, but searched and can't find it...

I've noticed recently that after turning off our x5d that it lurches a bit.. this didn't seem to happen before.

I usually use the parking brake so it doesn't really move, but doesn't seem normal.

Mine seems to do this as well, even with the parking brake. Steps are, stop, put into park, set parking brake and regardless of if the car is turned off or still on, it seems to roll a an inch or so.

Normal. As you turn off the car and release the brakes the drivetrain unloads. Happens on all cars. Wouldn’t notice with parking brake engaged BEFORE releasing brake pedal.

As absolute says...keep your foot on the brake pedal, place vehicle in park, set emergency/parking brake, then release your foot from brake pedal...if you want to prevent the "roll".

This vehicle rolls more than any other modern vehicle we've owned.

Whats even more strange feeling that i've noticed is that when I am sitting idling in the car for a extended period of time with it in park, ebrake on....sometimes out of the blue the car would move slightly on its own much like when you park and turn off the car. Its less than an inch but sometimes it scares the shit out of you. Happened to both my X5 35i and X5M. Doesn't always happen but i've noticed it more than once. Both from extended idling.

this is what I do

- keep your foot on brake pedal
- set E-brake
- foot off brake pedal
- after your foot off brake pedal, car will roll slightly
- at this stage, I believe the drivetrain is not loaded
- set in "P"
- turn off engine

hope this will help

When I park, I keep my foot firmly on the brake, I set the parking brake, THEN I put the transmission into P and then I turn the car off. Zero lurch or movement! I have done this for decades with all auto tranny cars. Works great!

Here is my strategy for parking on any sort of incline - and this is where it's most prominent.

- Foot on brake
- Shift to neutral
- Engage parking brake
- Release brake
- Parking brake now holding car
- Put car into park

Yet, on multiple occasions I have experienced the lurch.

Never experienced this with any other car I have driven. It’s very strange.

This is driving me crazy. My F13 didn't move at all when setting the parking brake.

The only thing I haven't tried yet is setting the auto hold, stopping, and just switching the car off... I wonder if it will lurch then.

Do people really use the parking brake all the time?

Yeah, I do. I don't like using the tranny to hold the car stationary.

I just assume that resting a 2.5t car on a transmission pawl can't be good for the tranny? Am I wrong?

I remember that (ages ago) once I parked my Golf and left it in gear on an incline, and it actually slipped.

If you're on mostly flat ground, using the park brake is kinda a waste. On a hill though, it is a good idea.

Don't worry, it's designed for that.

I agree it's normal.... To the OP, I wouldn't worry too much about it.... My 2013 X6M did it.... And my 2015 X6 50i also does it... Albeit, seems to be more noticeable in BMW's.

Your parking brake is out of adjustment. My old E70 used to do this also.
