Wheel balancing issues

I took my X5 to my local mechanic to get my tires changed. He said he couldn't balance my wheels correctly without a $2K adapter he didn't have. He said the centers of some of the new wheels from BMW, Audi, MB and Porsche are no longer true centers and can't be used for centering the wheels during balancing. First I have heard of this, is it true?
Thanks

Never ever heard of such. Cant imagine they would make the wheels uneven...unless its another trick for making more money on us.

Could it be that drivers of these brands use big rims, low profile tires etc which usually is hard to get perfectly balanced, and that your mechanic was just tired of people getting him to re-do alot of work without paying up?

I know they use a roadforce-addon to achieve better results on these wheels but I dont think it has to do with the center hole being off on newer wheels...

Never heard of such thing. I've changed my tires from summer to winter and vice versa and they never had a problem balancing it. I would go to other mechanic and see what they have to say.

I've never heard of such a thing either. In fact, when our 2016 X5 had only 500 miles on it we took it on a road trip to my in-laws' place for the holidays. We really hadn't done much highway driving up to that point. Anyway, the trip revealed an unbalanced wheel that was driving me CRAZY and there was no way I was driving the 8 hours back home experiencing the vibration in the steering wheel the whole way. My in-laws live out in the STICKS. I mean red-neck Chevy pick-up driving country. No BMW dealer for hours for me to get it taken care of for free (since the wheel was obviously not properly balanced at the factory). Anyway, I went to the local tire shop, talked to Billy (that was literally the name on his shirt) who said, "I ain't ever worked on a BMW before, but it should be like any other damn tire." So I made sure to tell him the proper torque for the lug nuts (and I watched him do it too), but my whole point is he balanced the tire perfectly on his machine and I'm 100000% confident he didn't have a special adapter for balancing European tires.

sounds like BS, all BMW wheels are hub centric and if the hub was not true center your car would wobble like there is no tomorrow.

go to another shop and dont even think of spending a dime on any adapters

What a load of crap. My local indy balanced my wheels just fine.

The only problem my guy has is he can't do wheels larger than 22".
